Wow! I LOVE diesel cars. I don’t think I knew they made a diesel escort. I just recently discovered Lincoln made a diesel Continental in the 80’s. I owned a 1983 diesel Oldsmobile Ninety Eight and loved it...

Kind of interesting. The rust on the roof looks a little concerning.

They also sold a Diesel Mark VII ('84-'86 I believe. Probably used the same BMW Diesel as the Continental). My first car was a '81 Cutlass with the 350 Diesel. Loved that thing.

I had a diesel Mazda, Volvo, Rabbit and 300D Benz back in the day. All DOGS! Bad injectors, black smoke. Smelly. Not fun. Not surprised they never caught on and got banned in the US. I was in Canada, maybe the Escort is an import. My Excursion in early 00 was a dog too. But we started buying clean diesels in 10 and they fly. A VW (kept inspie of the recall), two Bimmers and a F350. Not the same as the old days. Clean is great.

These were Mazda 2.0 diesel engines. Would have all the same issues you had. Got great mpg though!

Too bad many of the new diesels can't meet US emissions.

My Audi A6 had a turbo-Diesel V-6 in it that would pin you to your seat, once the turbocharger kicked in. When I drove it nice, it was also thrifty on fuel. I got rid of it, before the injectors could wear out, though
