My name is Nick and I live in Vancouver British Columbia, Canada. I drive a Ford Taurus Station Wagon but I need more power to tow a holiday trailer but I would rather buy a Station Wagon V8 and not an SUV with short cargo space in the back. I would like the cargo space depth of a Station Wagon? Any suggestions?
I'd take a cruise over to Shaughnessy or The Crescent and see if any of those folks are liquidating their big BMW and Benz wagons. Used to do home renos in that part of town, way back in the mid-80's.
Thank you and renos in the 80s Thank you for you reply and perhaps I will do that. But if you did renos in the 80's then you have to be geeting my age . I am 72 Cheers, Nick Nicolaas
62 actually. I worked for Nickolai Millwork (his brother was a New West councillor), so we did a lot of upscale homes. Even Jimmy's old one in West Van.
If you want a station wagon that will actually tow something, you're probably limited to the GM B-bodies from '94-'96 (Chevrolet Caprice or Buick Roadmaster, with the LT-1 V8); or an older GM or Ford big block wagon... For the Ford, it would be a '66 - '74 Country Squire or Mercury Colony Park with a 429 or a 460 V8. For the GM's, it would be '66 to '76 - a Chevy Impala or Caprice with a 396 - 454; a Pontiac Bonneville or Grand Safari with a 428 or 455; a Olds Custom Cruiser with a 455; or a Buick Estate Wagon with a 455 (these GM wagons had the clamshell tailgate design from '71 to '76). -- What you're looking for is a lot of torque to pull the travel trailer - more so than actual horsepower numbers.....
Re: actually towing something Thank you and I accept your advise but I am look king for something a little bit younger. I have been given to undesrtand that the Volkswagen Passat had a Station wagon model between 2003 and 2005. Nick N
Whoa, hold on there..... What are you going to tow with it? (Describe your trailer - length / weight, etc - pic would help, too.)
Trailer I have not bought a trailer yet and will buy it to suit the capability of the wagon. The Passat wagon between 2003 and 2005 was a V8 and was named a W8
Ahhhh.......one of these........ http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/volk...4185491QQsspagenameZRSSQ3aBQ3aSRCHQ3aUSQ3a101 The engine was actually a 'W' - 8, not a 'V' design. Rather strange. Somebody on here probably knows more about them than me.......
What Chrysler Wagon? Is it a Station Wagon or another SUV with a short Cargo area or is it Someting like the 2003 - 5 Volkswagon Passat. The engine was actually a 'W' - 8, not a 'V' design but it had the power.
I have a hitch on my Passat. It mounts up to the spare tire well and tow hook. Even though the engine might have enough power to pull, the hitch/mount setup is not conducive to heavy duty towing. I generally use mine for a bike rack and light loads in my 4x8 utility trailer. My wife's Subaru Outback can take a class 3 hitch, towing capacity is 2700 pounds, 3000 with a 6 cylinder.
