I need to replace my heater core, however I can't figure out how to get the thing out. I've got the 1962 Galaxy Shop Manual, and while it describes the process, there are few diagrams/pictures to help. It seems like it should come out from the engine bay, but looking where the hoses feed the core, I don't see any screws/bolts to take out to then slide the thing out. Anyone have any howto knowledge to push my way? Thanks, Dan
It should be straightforward. They usually get removed, within the passenger compartment. There must have been something you overlooked, besides getting an avatar, Chief
The heater box in the compartment doesn't look like it comes apart. Maybe it's a single unit that has to come out as a single piece. It's a big plastic box that goes from passenger footwell over to transmission hump and it's not obvious how it comes out.
A picture of your heater box would help to determine whether you need to remove the core from inside the car or under the hood. For example on the left hand side of the pic below you can see the access plate for the core in my 66 7Litre. No matter which way it comes out good luck on the replacement.
The Chief's looks totally different. As predicted, he has to crawl under the dash and fetch it from there: I found the image here, where there's plenty of vintage Colony Park eye candy: https://duckduckgo.com/?q=1963+merc...aclassix.com/images3/c672-seatback-remote.jpg
Re-reading the shop manual, it looks like I have to remove the retaining nuts on the engine side of the firewall. They just are not specific on which ones. <edit> The black box in the pic above is one unit. That's what I have to remove. I suspect I will have to loosen nuts and shake the box to see if I am getting the correct ones.
Since you aren't mentioning that the image I posted isn't identicle to your firewall, I'm assuming that you have to unscrew the entire unit from under the dash, in order to disect it, to remove the core, Chief. Once you've removed the glove box with innards, it'll look much easier to do. Just tear into it. Once you see how everything works, putting it back together won't be so frightening
I suspect it's like the later ones...you don't undo the glove box, necessarily, but you do unbolt the dash and move it partway out to slip the box out.
From poisons pic it definitely looks like an inside job. This is where a friend helping is handy. I've done a few heater cores and one climate control system. You just need to tell yourself "This is going to be awhile"
Either that or someone's going to have to hold a Smith & Wesson to his head, like Clint had to do. The only way it couldn't be an inside job is if a torch was used to amputate the faulty organ through the engine compartment
Yep it is the same as shown. I think the attachment is done through the fire wall, at least that's what the shop manual indicates. It's just not clear which nuts hold it on.
Better to unscrew a few more nuts than too few, Chief. Sooner or later, it'll have to come out, just like Wisdom Teeth
Here you go, Chief. Aside from this guy philosophising about why not to buy a Range Rover, the video is a pretty good moral booster. Unfortunately, it's not easy to find a video showing your particular car getting done: Sorry about this off-topic eye candy:
