No, it actually gets better at about 80 or so, in reverse. Problem is, that scares the $hit out of the folks on the Interstate. I'm good with it, though.
I remember when moving to Florida and my seven trips south with a 19' flat bed trailer with cars and or junk. One time I was hearing a loud rumble sound. I could see one of the 2" tow straps vibrating. Readjusted it and the noise went away. I'm sure adjusting the rack bars will change the sound.
You could always move to a place less windy. If not than always drive with the wind. See, problem solved and it didn't cost a dime.
Have you considered turning the radio up louder so you wouldn't hear the noise? That's probably the easiest fix of all! Good luck.
Hi Patrick. I've had the same problem with my 85 CP. I also have the wind deflector. The first time it happened I was going about 60 with strong cross winds and the noise scared the he!! out of me. I pulled over and started checking things right away. It has since happened two or three more times. The last time it happened I was able to pinpoint the noise more....the rattling from the wind actually seemed to be coming from up under the dash. I think the wind was somehow whipping through the floor vents and causing something inside of them to rattle around. Not totally sure about all this, but that is what I came up after repeating this experience under the same circumstances you have described.
I moved the rear crossbrace forward three inches, as it was nearly all the way back, originally. I have not encountered the vibration since.
Sounds good. I'll check mine and give it a try. Of course riding with the windows down won't be happening for a while yet here in the mid-Atlantic....
I experienced this with my 84 Colony Park when I installed the air deflector. It would only occur with the tailgate window partially open. Repositioning the adjustable rear cross bar further back stopped the vibration.
During the restoration of my 1988 Custom Cruiser I decided to bring the roof rack into original condition: with air deflector. Now I have strong wind noise over 50mph. But I don't know if it is from the air deflector or from the rear bar. I moved the rear bar 1ft to the front and the noise is better. The bars have an aerodynamic profile, but the rear bar is on my car mounted in the wrong direction. Last chance: to turn the rear bar. If I'd known that the deflector causes these troubles I don't had it mounted.
Hmmmm..... Problem ONLY occurs in a stiff crosswind...... So, I'm guessing air moving laterally across the spoiler is causing a harmonic) vibration. The spoiler on my Safari (similar design) has a center brace mounted to the roof (just a simple post). Is yours supposed to have a center post support?
Yes. It is supported by a long screw with a metal sleeve. With crosswind I couldn't test it because we had no wind in the last three days.
The vibration came back a while back. Removed the air deflector altogether, and no problems at all since.
That's a new one on me, as my CP and my bro's CS (both '83s) didn't have the deflectors, so I never had experienced that.
