When I got my Caprice Estate, my friend had the rear portion of the headliner in storage. Sometime in the past few years, squirrels did away with my headliner. Has anyone been successful in recreating one? My original was corrugated cardboard with a thin layer of Styrofoam on it, Then the headliner was glued to the Styrofoam. I was thinking of getting two sheets of corrugated, layering for strength, Creasing the bends, and using a thin layer of spray or expanding foam, then shaving it off. any other ideas, as mine seems like a lot of work. Does anyone make a replacement?
I would scour junk yards for another box wagon. The headliner material itself will most assuredly be shot, but you should be able to find the cardboard. Another option is maybe there's another owner out there who has his out, and can take some measurements for you.
Think original was fiberglass, Molded so very hard to make a new one that will be correct. Hit the junk yard for a headliner board. Just did an 84. My local shop re foamed and covered In stock fabric, Reinstalled in the car $300.
The original headliner board is fiberglass. I've got two if you ever get to northern VA. The problem with replacing the headliner is the unobtanium clips for the garnish molding. It is virtually impossible to remove the molding without breaking the clips, and new clips are not available anywhere.
You are correct Joe. My shop got something close to the original clips and ground off a tang then used a spot go adhesive to hold it in place. Worked well but don't know about the next person that goes there. May be a "permanent fix"
Anouther trick to help is to not remove the upper trim from the windshield, just slide the old head liner out, and work the replacement back in. That helped a lot and did not disturb the clips for the trim above the windshield.
Any of those clips you can save is a win win. Must be some on a shelf somewhere. I an in for a 1/2 dozen
I'll tell ya what really pisses me off. I've got the doors and fenders off my car and it's in a portable garage where I work on it. During this past summer, we had a long stretch of 95+ degree weather and it was too hot to do anything. When I finally opened the garage up, the heat had caused the headliners to sag down. Not the cloth, but the actual fiberglas backing. That's a headache I could have done without.
My board was cardboard, with a white Styrofoam coating. The PO still had it in a storage bin where the rodents ate it. If anyone has theirs out at any point, please send the measurements. the hard part will be getting the creasing correct where it tapers down.
