Im a wagon owner in Oregon, and ive had a 1988 Ford LTD Country Squire for a little over a year now, and have been the second owner. Its lived its life in a garage for its entire life until about 6 months ago. Did the fluids, plugs and it ran amazing. Its come to a few issues with what I think is the EGR tube, and the ability to turn over. New Battery, wires are fine, but what I'm facing now is when I try to start it, it winds up like its about to turn over, but instead of turning over it sounds like it free spins and winds down. Ive only owned a few cars before this, and had been given it about 6 months ago. Looking to get it running, but might need more work than I can afford with tires and pads etc. Ive started creating a job to carry with me but might not be able to afford the full tune up. I am in need of a running wagon to travel in, and this find would have been and still might be amazing, I'm just at a cross road where I'm scratching my head a bit.

    Any suggestions?

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you have a solid car. Unfortunately it's hard to trouble shoot from afar, but I would say the answer to your problem is likely a simple one. Don't give up! Search the web for answers and if you know a reputable shop that does repair work, see if you might be able to find someone to help you locally.

Welcome to the forum. I agree with dkarshuk03. Sounds like a problem with the 'Bendix' drive mechanism that engages the starter to the toothed flywheel.
