http://www.koco.com/news/dashcam-captures-ice-shatter-windshield-on-highway/37254130 It could kill someone.
Back in the early 80s I worked in a glass shop. A guy came in with a Ford Granada with a hole in the windshield, he said he was fallowing a tractor trailer when ice came off the roof. There was a ball of ice or frozen snow about the size of a football on the rear shelf, another 12 inches over and it would of hit him in the head.
I've never had it happen but saw lots of ice and snow falling off cars and big trucks. Often hitting cars behind it. Also saw many people driving with a space the size of a credit card to see out the windshield. I sure miss Illinois!
When hubby worked at a glass shop, he was called out late one evening for a similar incident. I went with him so he could bring their car to the shop. The windshield was complete smashed. The teenage children and the mom were send to the hospital. The dad, who stayed with the car, was pretty cut up. After hubby delivered his car to the shop we took the dad to the hospital to meet up with his family. They were all minor injuries but a terrible scare.
My biggest pet peeve.. I hate it when people don't sweep off their cars.. Now I'll hate it even more! And here in mid-western Minnesota, we have snow!
This actually happened to me this morning on my way to work. A pickup towing a closed in trailer pulled off a ramp in front of me. He took off like a shot. I noticed the snow starting to blow off the roof of the trailer so I backed off. Then all of a sudden it let go. A huge cloud of snow/ice chunks flew up into the air and crashed down covering both lanes of the highway. Buddy behind me started to pull out to pass me when I slowed down but back off pretty quick when he too saw the snow. I was glad I had some warning unlike the folks in the video. And a footnote, buddy driving the pick up didn't seem to react one way or another. He was soon gone out of sight. He was in some kind of hurry towing that trailer.
A huge cloud of snow/ice chunks flew up into the air and crashed down covering both lanes of the highway. So far this hasn't happened down here in Florida. An old refridgerator, water heater, car parts, lumber, but no ice or snow! On my first trip out of town with the Impala I straddled a steel band maybe 2" X 6' in the highway. Made a terrible noise but I guess everything is okay.
California equivalent? Yesterday on my way to work I was behind a small Toyota pick-up truck that was carrying various tools and suddenly two sheets of dry-wall took flight, straight up into the air. Fortunately for me they drifted to the right and shattered in the lane next to me (no body was in the lane at the moment). Upon arriving at the stop light, I lowered my passenger window, alerted the driver and he immediately made an illegal U-turn in the middle of the intersection - against the red light - and doubled back to go look for his lost supplies. Talk about your road-idiots.

I can't remember the many times I saw this over the years in Illinois. Not so much here in Florida. Some complained about the old guy getting a ticket. If he ran over their kids or dog they'd think diferently about it. Everywhere they should issue more tickets.
