I couldn't believe it when my parents always had plain Jane cars they bought one of these used in dark blue.

A friend had one in the '70s (it might even have been a '66). I had forgotten about the unique speedometer on the Toronado until I saw this car.

My older sister still owns the 66 she bought back in the early 80's, hers is Gold with a black interior, Great car but the 66/67 Q-jets have a center bolt holding the throttle plate onto the bottom of the carb, and Oldsmobile used a open Plenum intake and when the center screw backs out it falls into the intake and from there disaster to what ever cylinder it makes it into.
She found that out the hard way 3 summers ago when she was on vacation in Minnesota. When we did some research and found a service bulletin that installed a stainless Steel shim with 4 holes for the individual barrels, thus if the center screw backs out it is retained by the shim. After a $2500 engine repair bill we added the shim.
But they are great driving and very unique machines! And this one looks very Nice.

Of note that amuses me is ALL of the options it has, including gauges, yet they didn't spring for the oil pressure gauge - just the idiot light. Because in those days you could choose which of the 4 you wanted as gauges and which as lights. Not something you see much of...

From what I can tell the 66 Toronado's only came with the dash style this car has, my sisters 66 also has the same gauge package. And no other gauge package seems to be optional per this web site.

    Standard Features

    Options

    http://automotivemileposts.com/toronado/toronado1966optionalequipment.html

I am not saying that later years other options were not available, Nor am I an Olds Expert.

When I worked for GM the general thinking was they did not like to put oil pressure gauges on any car other than Performance cars. This was supposedly to reduce warrenty costs. I was told many buyers would bring there car to the dealer to look at "High Oil Pressure readings at cold start up" They said many owners would complain that there was something wrong with the engine because when they started it in below freezing temps the oil pressure would be to high.

I actually worked on a couple of cars that actually had Gauges that were just idiot lights with a needle. As long as you had about 2psi the needle would stay in the middle of the scale. Some even had inputs from the Distributor to make the needle jump higher if the engine rpm increased above a set RPM.

I found it showed a poor mechanical information level of the average car buyer, and the 1st case of dumbing down tech for the average person I personally ran into.

Still like the 66/67 Toronado's, Great cars, no torque steer, my sister still drives hers all summer. Great amount of low end Torque, and 8mpg all day long.

8mpg all day long. _________:cry:_________Sort of makes the owner want to joy ride!
My 1977 Ford truck 460 got 9 MPG, even pulling a 32' 5th wheel RV and while I was parked at work!:rofl2:

No console - I think what you're actually seeing is a reflection off the clear plastic floor mats.....
EDIT: More like clear plastic carpet protectors.......
