rear seal is leaking on a 1964 rambler six cylinder. Do i need to drop the crank to replace it or can it be done by droping the pan and cap ? the manual states that the seal is a two piece seal.
First off, you need to find out if you can get a modern replacement, which doesn't require a special tool to install, or use rope seal, which does require a special tool. In either case, if done correctly, you only need to loosen the main caps for the rear of the crank to drop down enough for installation. If you have any more questions, you can PM me.
I'm sure that the rear main on that engine is a rope type seal. These are still available and there is a tool for the replacement of them. I looks like a corkscrew on the end of a short cable with a "T" handle on one end. You pull the main cap and screw it into the upper main seal and pull it out. Then you push it back thru the upper hole left and screw the new seal onto it and again, Pull it into place. I have done this many times and the only trouble I've had with rope seals is that they don't last more than 100K miles. But that's plenty long enough for most people. Dave
I purched a kit for the replacemnt, but no instructions were enclosed. The original manual only shows install with the crack out. I"m going to give it a go this weekend and will post how it went.
Seal replace I purchased a main seal kit....instructions not included. The original manual only shows how to replace the seal with the crank out. I'm going to give it a try this weekend and will later post about how it went!
You don't have to remove the crank, but you do have to loosen the main bearing caps and let it come down a little. The rear cap is the only one you remove.
