That's a good idea, Blackfoot. As I understand it, the unit has to triangulate 3 satellites to zero in on your exact location. I would be very interested in knowing if...once you did that outside the car...if it would be confused when put in the car and maybe have to start over.

Sometimes my radar detector goes off when a car is coming toward me, which is not any type of police car. It is giving off some kind of signal that the detector picks up. I assume that you have tried the GPS without the engine running. Somewhere your car is giving off a signal that the GPS is picking up.

Follow-up: Today I took the wagon for a ride and before I left, I put the magnetic external antenna on the roof. The GPS found it's location right away - within seconds, and worked perfectly. When I put the antenna back on the dash (in the windshield), it still worked good. Seems that once it locks onto the satellites, it stays locked on. Guess the windshield's the culprit.

    Yup...that's the culprit.

I forgot to update as well.

I turned my GPS on and it didn't connect right away. I stepped outside the car with it inhand and instant connection and stayed connected when in the car. I already knew the multicolored tint on the windshield was the problem and my test verified it.

Yeah...those weird colored windshields are metalized. Upside is that it screws up the cops' radar if they have one of those windsields. Forces them to hold the gun outside the car!! :yup::clap:
