Antique plate Question

In addition to the full service DMV offices which are always crowded, Virginia also has limited service DMV Select offices that pretty much do vehicle registrations and little else. If you are in Fairfax, the one on Armstrong Street in Fairfax City is probably the closest to you. I registered my wagon with antique tags at one of the DMV Select offices and was the only customer in the place at the time. Good luck.

License plates or Tags

Since this topic first came up I've made some changes. We bought a small home back in Illinois so I let my Florida YOM 55 Chevy wagon license tag expire.
Now I'm hoping if and when we move back I can renew my old Illinois tag R TOY 55. I still have both plates so don't see any reason it should be a problem.
This won't happen for awhile, but I always plan and plan ahead!

 

I have Colorado collectors vehicle plates on my wagon.
A five year tag is about the same cost as registering for three.
Supposedly they require you to sign off that you will not exceed over 4,500 miles year. I was never asked to do this, and have never heard of anybody being pulled over and questioned regarding mileage.

 

I wouldn't recommend driving it to work in Virginia with antique plates even if it is headed to the shop afterwards. If you got hit, your insurance might well drop your claim. Stopping by the grocery store on a pleasure drive seems alright though. You might consider regular plates for a while if you want to take it to work or run errands with it. I left regular Virginia plates on my Crown Vic SW because I drove it to work occasionally. I sort of miss that now as I have antique Virginia plates so it is a weekend pleasure driver.

I've never had a problem with the police in SE Virginia or in Pennsylvania. They do have to crane their necks down to see my plate on the '56 Fleetwood because it's just about as low as it can be.

 

Jaxops all of those rules is why in Illinois and now in Florida I get YOM, antique, or regular tags. I like to drive wherever I please.
As for the antique tags what I remember the only rule is the vehicle must be 20 years or older.
In Illinois I did like those personal plates but they cost more than a regular tag. Way more in Florida.
My biggest restriction is my car insurance and their stupid mileage restrictions.

In Sillynoise you can get antique plate.. Cost 35$ for five years...
Antique plates are restricted use.. There are required if you wish to
use YOM plates.. The AV plate must be in car and accessible if stopped..
Standard plate starts at 101$ per YEAR ...Add for vanity and add for personal...
There is a new plate called EA which is "extended antique".. Cost 55$ per year..
The EA plates is for antique type cars but pretty much unrestricted use between
April and Oct ... Between Oct and April very limited use...

 

I don't think I can afford to own and drive a car in Illinois anymore!
Maybe I should keep my Florida tag.
Even 21 years ago and before this the vanity plate was quit a bit more over the regular tag. Maybe $25 a year. But there were no restrictions in Illinois.

So the way I understand on antique plates they are good for five years and then I can use a year of manufacture Illinois plate in place of it? I have some of those yet.
But my useage would be restricted. Most likely only good for car events and things like parades. Wouldn't work for me. I want to go for joy rides and buy milk and eggs.

Looks like I will have to bend over and just get the standard Illinois plates. But the EA may be okay. That is if I can get my driver license there. If it's like Floriduu I will need all kinds of proof of citizanship and be a homeowner. That is unless I am an illegal non English speaking person.

I like the YOM here in Florida. It only costs like $30-$35 or so a year and there is no restrictions like a normal tag.

Or I can do like 20% of the drivers down here just pick up some old tags from the junk yard or someone else's car. Then I don't even need insurance or a driver license.

 

Well the good news is, T1,, many (including myself) have AV plates and drive them...
Very few law enforcement types will bother you.... And as you are retired they
would probably totally ignore you....

 

At my advanced age I actually like being ignored!
If we ever do get moved and I transfer my plates I'm not really worried. I'll see about the vanity plates like I had on all my cars years ago. If it seems like too much I'll just get whatever works best. I even have a MODEL T1.
I can't see the license plates from the driver seat and the 20' long garage will most likely make seeing them difficult anyway.
What I do like here in Floriduu is they come due on my birthday. I believe in Illinoiz they are due whenever you buy the vehicle or buy the tags. Maybe I can drive on expired Florida tags till next January! That is if we get moved by January!:confused:
