Factory not a conversion. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-M...tr=true&hash=item2a4ead2880&item=181708597376
Looks just like a factory 305/5.0 with a go fast chrome air cleaner to me to me. They did not make these factory with the 350/5.7 so if it is, it's not factory
I like that wagon. A little on the plain side but looks nice. I had a 1980 Malibu 2-door with V-6 229 CU that ran decent. I'd think a 305 would be fine. If it's really a 350 it would be great.
My daughter had two of these.......one had a 267 V8, and another with a 305.......I really don't think they put 350's in them.
Guys these were available factory according to every source I look at, just super rare. http://www.automobile-catalog.com/car/1979/202145/chevrolet_malibu_wagon_5_7l_v-8_automatic.html
Looks like it was available in 1979 only with 49 state high altitude emission package (luck Denverites!). See the original sales brochure at oldcarbrochures.com. In 1978, the 350 was an RPO for all states except CA (no mention of high altitude emissions).
I was thinking my 1980 Malibu was a 229 V-6 and Buicks were 231. The 2-door I had was the el-cheapo salesman's special type with only a basic heater, wipers, and 3-speed column. I don't think it even had a radio. I bought it nearly new to pull behind our class A motor home and it was used only to shop and site see. Occasionally I drove it 15 miles to work when the weather was too bad for my old Harley. I'd forget it wasn't a 350, it ran so good.
