Are you planning to drive your car daily or just to shows, etc?

I have one at hagarty and my dad has 2 with hagerty and I have no complaints. Never had to make a claim so if I ever do, hope I still have no complaints. In 2005 my dad had Metlife insurance on a 1957 Chevy Del Ray we restored and Hurricane Katrina got it, they came out a looked at it and in 5 days he had a check for the valued amount with no issues at all but 2 years later when he wanted to insure his Corvette the premiums were a lot more and the value was for $10,000 less. Just my experience.

I use Hagertys to insure my Montego wagon. You're probably aware that there are limitations on how many miles you can put on it, and requirements like it has to be garage kept. The few that I contacted all had similar requirements.

I have Hagerty and have been very happy with them. I did have a claim several years back- an unmanned Kia rolled from the lot next door and hit my '69 Lemans while at a cruise night. Hagerty paid for all the repairs and they did all of the dealing with her insurance co.

As far as I know, Hagerty doesn't have any milage restrictions, but the insured car can't be your primary vehicle for daily use. You can use your classic for running to the store or drive it to work on a nice day- just not every day.

I use Grundy and love it. Around $170 a year for 8K coverage. Must me garaged. Must have proof of a daily driver. Can not use the car to drive to work run errands or as a back up daily driver. But there are no mileage limits. They just don't want it in situations a daily driver would encounter. They will ask for pics as well.

BTW there are big differences between a valued policy and an agreed value policy.

I have a daily driver. I do not and will never have a "normal" job, so driving it to work isn't going to happen.

My 79 Ford wagon "Izzy" is going to be classic plated, and inspected( this saves me yearly registration fees and emissions inspection fees). I need to drive it temporarily until my totaled "Stewie" wagon is replaced. (75 Buick/truck.)

I do NOT have a garage at my home, BUT do have inside storage for all cars, if needed for the "has to be kept inside" deal.

Grundy was at $115 with a $100 deductible for full coverage at $6000 value. Didn't do haggerty recently but that was 200 and some. With No deductible.

My wife and I COLLECTIVELY never drive over 10,000 mi a year. So we are emissions exempt. She drives 2500 mi or less and I less than 5000. And our regular insurance seems to be just too damn high for our cars. AT THAT amount of miles!

Classic car insurance does NOT cover daily driving; i.e. commuting to work or school, going to the store, taking little Johnny to Cub Scouts, etc. Most policies cover shows, parades, and such, plus "Sunday drives" and the like.

Several years ago, one of my co-workers drove his '62 Corvette to work, where a gal backed into the quarter and punched a nice, big hole in it...guess what? He ended up paying for the whole deal. You take your chances.

Note that I specified Hagerty in my response. Not all insurances are the same!!!

I pulled this directly from the Q&A section of Hagerty's website:

"Q: Would collector car insurance provide coverage if the vehicle was driven to a shopping mall to run errands or a gym? If the weather is nice and I don't need to carry anything large, bulky, or messy I would drive my collector car instead of my daily vehicle.

A: Our policy is a flexible, limited use policy. We do not, however, limit you to just show and club use. Occasional pleasure driving fits our underwriting guidelines, but our policy is not intended for vehicles regularly driven to work or school or for running errands. We look for usage that is consistent with owning a valuable automobile and the availability of insured regular-use vehicles for daily transportation. While the average mileage generally put on a collector vehicle is approximately 2,000-3,000 miles annually, our policy language does not state a specific mileage limitation.

This limited, flexible use policy includes coverage for pleasure driving. That may mean taking your family out to dinner, out for ice cream or on an enjoyable Sunday cruise, for example. Taking the vehicle once in a blue moon to work to show it off is acceptable as well. We ask that you as the owner of a collectible vehicle make the decisions that are right for your situations. We have not had a problem with our clients abusing the privilege of flexible usage, so we are able to continue without the strict guidelines that some of our competitors may have. We would prefer that you do not take the vehicle to high-risk parking lots, such as the gym or the mall."

This is what I am going to do. Transfer plates and insurance from "stewie" to the ford and apply for classic plates. They will take appx 2 to 4 weeks to get here. I can daily drive it that way till the plates come. That way I'm covered for daily while I need it. Once the plates get here I can switch the insurance. I should have my daily driver by then and will not drive the ford much at all.

During that time I will research company's. But any suggestions are considered and appreciated.

Note that you don't need "classic" plates to have Hagerty insurance.

Run away from normal car insurance on a classic!!! Like I said earlier, you take your chances if you choose to abuse the terms of ANY collector car policy.

If I get classic plates I never have to pay a yearly registration fee again.
Also I am totally exempt from emissions inspection.

Plates are 75 for the life of the vehicle and transfer with the car or I can put them on another after sale. This in the long run will save me $36 a year. I have had the car for sale for a while, And people who want it want to "get right in and drive", and most have been from pittsburg where emissions is a BIOTCH. So they would have to Buy the car and wait for the classic plate to get here to drive it. so in the long run it will help it sell

Inspection is $20-30 per year. Emissions sticker is also $20-30 per year

I have driven this car Appx 1000 mi in the last 3-4 years. and once I get another driver/truck. will drive it very little.

The registration and inspection savings per year will help with the insurance, and I will have better coverage. Unless of course a drunk tags it before I get everything ironed out. LOL

    Grundy Insurance

I carry Grundy on my wagon and it was fairly easy to apply for the "agreed value" protection plan and it's not very expensive in my opinion. I think it's a lil over $200 a year. I. like others, thankfully have never had to file a claim though.
