    I've done #2,#5 (just this July),#11,#13, and #18.

Two years ago my wife and I decided that we would drive from L.A. to the farm in MN. every summer with the kids. Last year we did the CA, NV, AZ, UT, WY, SD, to MN route. This year we did CA,OR,ID,WY,SD, to MN. She stays with the kids for the summer while I go back to L.A. for work.

I make it a point to go back the road less traveled. Last year it was the Badlands route, this year it was mostly a straight shot south and then a straight shot west, 81, 56, 50, 24, 70, 15 to home. Kinda lonely on some of them roads. We also make it a point to not plan where we end up. So no reservations anywhere.

So far we've done the summer trips all with the Excursion. One day I'd love to do this with one of the classics I own.

Shelby we have rarely planned too far ahead and usually stop when we get tired and need fuel and food. Or see something that is of interest we didn't know about.
That's why I hate modern RV camping. They now expect you to know a year ahead of time where you will be on any given night. If our forefathers had to do that they'd never discovered Kaliforniay.

I have a big problem when I'm driving. There's always some sort of itinerary involved, so I'm always focusing of making progress on the trip itself. I very rarely venture off the beaten path, so to speak - and I know that's where you find the really interesting scenery. Got to do better at that.....

heck, our forefathers wouldn't have even discovered the new world!

KK, you scare me now..... I have memories of road trips with 19 hour no bathroom brakes, complete dehydration, no food, or anything else because we according to Dad......'Have to be at point "B" by 5PM' , no if and or's because we are on fun filled family vacation.....insert star wars death star music:rofl2::wave:

Then we got a camper van and OMG, life became laid back:yup:

It was nice without the itinerary this year. Last year I was hauling a John Deere tractor up to the farm, so we didn't make many stops. This year our kinda expected 5 day trip turned out to be 8 days.

Yeah, that was my dad, too.
Now, my older sister and her husband are just the opposite (probably more her doing than his). They could take a week to get 500 miles........
I gave her a ride home from relatives in Carson City down to So Cal one time. She wanted to stop at every little roadside curio and antique shop we passed. After the second one, I told her I wasn't stopping anymore....... and I didn't.

I know this well. To my advantage until recent years I always pulled a flat bed trailer or RV. Just can't stop a lot of places along the way. Especially those little junk sales and yard sales my wife likes. Sadly it also makes some interesting things impossible to stop at.
With only a van, and lately a pick up truck, I've come up with several excuses. "I want to get thru Nashville. etc. before people get off work. It's on the left side of this busy highway. It's too dangerous getting off and back on." And other honest answers as needed.
But mostly I seem to be more hard hearing when in one of those "honey stop over there." situations comes up.:( As I pass by I usually say. "HUH?"
