I was going to suggest a linolyum type material. Dang I am not spelling these words correctly. Or even checkerboard tile or small patteren checkered linolym. Many wagons had this material originally.
Believe me, our wagon was done as economically as I could and has always been used. Home carpet padding, even roofing tar paper can be used as insulation and padding.
Those perfect cars are rarely driven regulary.

Hi Kristi! I am said Satellite owner that Cat was speaking of...his ability to make almost any thread about my interior is legendary. I have found that interior is a whole new experience and seems to be tricky to say the least and a slow and painful process to say the most. I am still in the destruction stage for the most part. I have many excuses you could shove in right here but I will save those for when Cat starts ragging on me again. :yup:

I really like your Satty by the way.

I totally agree with alot of what you are suggesting Kristi. With three kids you want to be able to enjoy that cutie for what it was intented for...hauling! Kids, camping gear, groceries, football stuff...whatever. Making that car to pretty will definately make you nervous about using it.
I just want to get mine on the road, nothing pretty, just safe and reliable.
Good luck with your efforts, it can't be easy with all those mouths to feed. Don't worry about how long it's taking, you'll get er dun...

Looks like a very nice wagon. "ratting" deeply concerns me but I am not hip so probably do not even understand.

Thanks. I would love to have a wagon like yours in my collection as well.

A straw beach mat might be another possible material to use on the interior, maybe as a headliner, or maybe to cover sections of the door panels, and maybe even to put down over the linoleum flooring in the way back.

    Thanks and an update...

    Gentlemen,

I don't know if you all will see this, but I thought I'd ping you all. I tried to rat it out with my dad, but as we went, we found more and more hidden issues with the body. Finally said 'to hell with it' and went for a full tear down and repair and paint of the body. This is not a pro, rotisserie paint job, but we should have it this week. The paint is ostensibly the Spinnaker White and we did not do woodgrain, but a contrast color, as it had when I bought it from the original owner's son. Incidentally, I may do woodgrain later... There was a really helpful post about woodgrain in '11 that got stickied (by you, widebody!!!!), so I hope to get some samples when there is money. Given how slowly my project wagon is going, I don't suggest that anyone - who might've given half a damn to begin with - should hold their breath.

Thanks to everyone on this forum who have helped so far - and many of you did without even knowing it. We got tons of money-saving and beautiful ideas here and dad and I have been lurking the thread for years now. I hope to post pics of the finished wagon by the end of summer when it's mostly assembled (I hope - the interior is stripped out of it), and some intermediate stage shots when I get to Ohio next month.

    Kristi

Looking forward to seeing pictures of what it looks like now. I do hope the wood grain eventually makes it back on the sides.

Hey, thanks, CatModelT! Yeah... it really looks great on the outside. Just bought the hood lip trim yesterday (that flipping hurt like hell - my dad shouted 'HIGHWAY ROBBERY' when I told him what I paid, but been looking for awhile... that part is hard to find in good shape and extremely pricey when it is, but one has to have it unless one is stripping all of the chrome trim), but the wagon is an empty shell with a pretty face - literally.

When I get home, I'll post interior shots so that you can see how insanely desperate the situation is. It's effectively a 20' two seater completely stripped of any type of comfort or sound deadener. It's like driving a snare drum set on top of a hot rod lawn mower. The roof interior is surface rusted to hell and there's an acre of that to take care of. The seats are still in decent shape - the front seat just needs spring repair so that I can leave off sitting on stacks of pillows to drive it. I'd like to get them reupholstered, but that will definitely have to wait until May (Maybenever) and it won't be factory-original duplication by a stretch.

Still, I'm driving it this summer, come hell or high water. It's only moderately dangerous and extremely uncomfortable, but I'm looking forward to it.

Jim, I know this wagon with the Coronet hood! Man, I hate those people. They bought that wagon for a song from an old lady and that bad boy was in PERFECT shape. Those folks won the wagon lottery, all joking aside. It has the original 383 in perfect running condition and has probably 100k on the odo.

That said, I don't care for the black Coronet striped hood juxtaposed with the wagon and it's trim and colors. Just a preference thing. I would like to someday get an air grabber hood painted body color with no other decals and the like. The air grabber would give a bit more air to my engine to breathe and breaks up the vast, blank monotony of the stock hood (bonus)

Got three more weeks... Going to spend the eight after that getting as far through the interior as I can before school starts here in NYC. Not nearly enough time with my baby and I'll never be able to bring it here.

That's actually Not a Coronet hood. A Coronet hood would not lone up to the grille. That's actually a standard 1970 Road Runner/ GTX hood. Basically the same as putting a GTO hood on a LeMans wagon or a 4-4-2 hood on a Vista Cruiser. I like it either way, with the flat hood or the Road Runner/GTX hood.
