here is a little description of the power tour that may answer some of your questions.
1- you do not have to do the whole tour but can enjoy 1 day or all if you want
2- spectators are free and can get numerous freebies from the different vendors on the tour
3- participants pay either daily or long haul
4- you will see things you never imagined such as
tonka toy truck was about 12 ft high
    jet fighter plane looking car
5- some people think of the long haul as a job because everyday you must be to the next stop before 6 pm
6- some people follow the directions hot rod provides and hang out at the venue once they arrive checking out the cars. Myself i enjoy seeing the scenery and local history , so i may run ahead of the pack, check in at the venue and then go off on my own or with a group to do things. In 2010 i took my wife and daughter along in Iowa we drove on the track , in springfield Il we went to Lincolns home , his library, his tomb and had a historic rt66 cozy dog ,then caught up to the pack. another day we left early and visited his childhood home. on the way to bowling green ky , we went to momouth caves on the way there stopped at the venue quickly ,got our tickets punched, left and went to see the underground river tour
7- in order to qualify as a long hauler you must have a timecard punched at every stop, how long you stay at the stop is up to you
8- a few vendors give a magnet sets or poster sets with a different one each day so you would have to visit there display daily

If you can come out for the day it is probably one of the biggest shows you will see. If you can make any of this yr's stop as a participant or spectator and would like to share some local cuisine and talk wagons let me know

Thanks Jeff. Sure sounds interesting and fun. Sadly we can't make it.
We have been to many of those places you mentioned. Bowling Green way before the Vette factory and museum and the cave. Being from central Illinois we visited Abe's Springfield home and boyhood home at New Salem. He was never home however. But we did catch him at the tomb.
    Have fun.

My friend and I are planning to hit the first two stops on the tour. This will be the second time for me, the first for him. I did the long haul in 2011.

My plan is Charlotte, Knoxville, and Charlston, and a bunch of gas stops in between.

My shop will be sending at least three cars.

    I am ready to leave!

Leaving from Gainesville, we'll probably go through Jax then up I-95. We plan on taking Friday off from work and getting into Charlotte that evening or afternoon. My friend's brother lives in the area so we may stay with him. When were you planning to head up?

Did anyone attending see an diesel-powered hearse? I think it was a Buick. From the sound of it, it was running a tractor engine. I was behind it for a ways between Charlotte and Knoxville, but lost it when pulled off for some pictures. Never saw it in Knoxville and we only did the first two stops.
