Hi there, newbie here! I grew up riding around in a 1966 Chrysler Newport wagon until about the age of 6, when Dad moved up into Cadillac land. My wife and I can't stand minivans, SUVs and CUVs, and now that we're in Child Land, we've decided we want a wagon as our people mover. -Tim
to people mover land. And dog, cat, and stuff moving. A nice station wagon is good and useful as a family vehicle. All of the sheep can have their mini vans, SUV's and other modern movers.
tvtino. So what are you looking for? Gonna stay with Mopar or are you branching out? Long Roof iz kinda likw belly buttonz there every where Speak up and we'll help you spend as much as you've got, Jer
hi.. would your old wagon been something like this... it is behind my shop i hate to see it just being used as storage.... but i can only restore so many by myself http://s202.photobucket.com/user/rcplumley/media/wagons/dodgeexhaustyardpics008.jpg.html
Sorry I'm just replying - been a bit busy... Anyway, @Bigbarneycars, no not looking for Mopar, specifically. I became a bit of a Ford guy when I bought a Mustang back in the '80s. I do like classic Mopar muscle (Road Runners are my favorites), but I'm leaning toward a Ford for a wagon primarily due to my mechanical familiarity with them, and what I think is more availability of cars and parts. @whiskey runner: that looks like a newer ('67 or so?) Dodge or Plymouth, but I could be wrong. Our car was like this one: http://www.1962to1965mopar.ornocar.com/sampsa.html only in dark blue. Oh, and I misstated in my original post - ours was a '65. I have two ideas at this point - a later Panther wagon ('88 or newer) or an older car with a heart transplant. I really like the EFI 5.0s, and I think putting one of them in, say, a '77 Country Squire would be just awesome. That seems like more of a dream project at this point, though. Getting a newer Country Squire or Colony Park that was built with that technology might be easier for our situation. Right now, we're not actively buying. We have some stuff to take care of first, so I'm doing a lot of looking and learning at this point. Oh, and my wife loves the simulated wood applique, so that's a must.
First off, welcome to the Nuthouse we call home. Second, give up the idea of a 5.0 in a 77 Country Squire. That is nowhere near enough engine. It will be forever working, HARD. You would do better to find the 351 from an F-series pick up truck. That would be a lot more economical, and still give you the efi you want. Just take the OAD with it, for some sort of highway mileage.
Welcome to the SWF, Tim. I'll second what Mike said. If you go for one of the 70's barges (say '69 - '78), swapping in a later-model injected 5.0 won't exactly give you sparkling performance. Those wagons are simply too big and heavy. If i was working with one of those, a nice built 351 would work (you could even adapt the FI off the 5.0), or get a nice 429/460 and put a nice intake / FI on it. The other option is the downsized models from '79 - '91. These are very nice wagons. Try to go for a '86 or newer for the latest fuel injection technology. A nice '87 Mercury Grand Marquis Colony Park is hard to beat.
Good advice, thanks. Maybe I'll keep the current search limited to the late-model job, and keep the hot-rodded earlier model for later... Who says you can't have two (or more)? BTW Krash, my wife will just love that Colony Park photo!
