I finally got all the weatherstip removed from my parts car to send off. I sent a request to Steele rubber to see if they were interested in repo ing them and also put in a call to Chad at Class Tech Cars to see if he was still interested. Waiting for replys from both. Is there any other company I should send a request to? I know there are alot of people that need tailgate seals but how about window and door seals. Body style 71D and 71K includes Cougar, Torino, Montego and LTD II station wagons covering many years. Let me hear from you Ford/Mercury wagon owners. :icon_drive:
Weather strip Progress Talked with Chad at Class Tech cars today. Class-Tech-cars.com He said to send him all the weather strip, beltlines, door and tail gate and he would take it from there. Hopefully in the not to distant future the Torino,Montego, Cougar and LTD II wagon owners will be able to purchase new weather strips for our wagons. .
Class-Tech-cars.com .... sounds familiar... same as the one on eBay selling glovebox liner for Buick boattails? Same stuff (and prices) as Metro and Steele etc and no tailgate weatherstrips
I went to a Performance shop here that deals mainly in GM parts and got my Fairmont weatherstrips, including the flock fabric for my Window glides (reliner fabric that you glue in with spray adhesives.) Anyway, he lists some of his vendors on his site, most of which are US firms. One is an authourized GM Reproduction firm OER. The guy wouldn't tell me who he got my weatherstrip from, just that he got a good deal. It cost me $41 CDN for all of the windows. My big rubber ones were in excellent shape, after I cleaned them off and refreshed them with ABS plumbing adhesive cleaner and tire cleaner. http://www.walkerautoparts.com/ Here's OER's website (they don't show much though): http://www.oerparts.com/
There off I put all the weather-strip in the mail yesterday so the clock is ticking. We''l see how long it takes for these items to show up for sale. Off for a weekend with the Old Guys at a cruise in in Eustis Fl. Were finalizing plans for our run to Springfield for the Route 66 Festival the end of Sept.
Drip rails on a Fairmont wagon are really tricky to reinstall. The manuals don't show diddly, and the Fairmonts don't use anything like the other models. They have one screw at the A pillar, and the rest depends on those 1.25 inch barbed clips. I took mine off in early summer, cleaned off the clips and rubber and left the chrome molding intact but washed off the surface dirt. When I got into them I found a dried out 1/4" diameter foam strip that sits in the drip 'tray' and serves to press against the inside face of the rubber 'flange' that keeps the rain/water/melting snow off the unsuspecting passenger who opens the door, unprepared for a cold shower! Well of course my Mexican beauty had hers all dried out, but the donor car had good ones but a bit shorter. I found some and added to it. The nasty part are those clips. If you don't remember how they were attached, you're fiddling for 30 minutes trying to figure it out! Nasty to install. I had enough (8 per side) but some were NFG from both cars, even though I derusted them all. The little trapezoid section goes over the molding's inside edge, AFTER you seat the clip onto the hard plastic's locating cutouts. The little 'barbs' do the crimping on the trim and the car's roof lip. Then you have to just start the only screw, use a Rubber Mallet to start the install from the Rear of the molding, making sure that the front door 'down swoop' is well located or the door won't shut, Oh and line up the assembly so that the lower edge clears the B pillar. Nasty, Nasty, Nasty!!!!! That was one of Ford's poorer ideas.:banghead3:
Tailgate weatherstripping Sonny, I was reading this older post from you advising that you sent your weatherstripping to Class-Tech-Cars for duplication. Did they ever reproduce the back tailgate weatherstripping for the Torino wagon??? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Carlos
