Heya fellow wagon lovers! I did a search and didn't turn anything up, so I'll pose the question to you guys: Where have you guys found affordable car covers for your extra large size wagons? I've got a 69 Coronet Wagon that I just recently purchased and I've been looking for a cover for it for a while now with nothing to show for it. My usual preferred cover company, Covercraft, says that none of their "semi-custom" covers will fit the Coronet wagon, though they'll make me a real custom cover for it for $$$$. I don't need the fanciest of covers, though, just something to protect the car through the winter months in MA so that its not totally trashed by the time I am ready to work on it during the spring! I've been pondering trying to get a much more universal style cover than I am used to, or maybe one for a van or something, and using that, but tying it around the car so that it doesn't blow around. I thought to myself, well, if anyone knows what its like to try and find a cover for one of these beastly wagons, its gotta be the guys on SWF! Thanks!
Gotcha Covered Two questions SnekeEyez. #1...Doez the wind ever blow the white crap around where you and your coronet are? #2...What do you think iz a fair price for a well made car cover? OH, and BTW. Not that it really matterz but I paid 'bout $250 for the one that'z been covering the '61 Batwagon for the last 10 yearz so you know My thoughtz on question #2. Want the 800# of the company in SoCal that custom made the cover with a few simple measurments from Me? P.M. Me and I'll give you Name and #. Jer
I'd say a cover for one of those SUV's may fit the bill - perhaps a '02 - '10 Ford Explorer, or maybe a Dodge Durango? Take some rough measurements of the length of you greenhouse, and your hood, and see how they compare. One thing though, an SUV car cover will probably be dragging on the ground a bit, since their bodies are a bit taller overall. Marshall
1) Yep, we certainly get a lot of the white crap! I wish we got less, actually! 2) Honestly, $250 is a little on the steep side in my opinion. I usually manage to find the Covercraft Evolution covers, which are a premium fabric designed to breathe and yet keep out everything from water to critters, for around $200 shipped to me, and I've found them for much lower than that as well. I can find the SUV/van versions of the Evolution for around that price, so I think I will go with one of those before I go with a custom-made one. If it comes down to it, I may go that direction if I cannot figure out where to get a cover that might fit properly. Thanks for the tips, Marshall. I had thought of an SUV cover, though I hadn't yet tried to figure out which SUV would be the best size. I will definitely take some measurements and compare. I will keep looking around and will report back on what I end up with. Lets face it, a lot of these old wagons are roughly the same size, no matter the make, so a cover for my Coronet will likely work for others as well.
Where you may run into a problem with the modern SUV cover is the hood length. The base of the A pillar has been moved forward on the new vehicles, so the hood is much shorter. Just look at the depth of the dash cover on many of the newer cars. If they still make one, the cover for something like the 79-91 Country Squire or Colony Park may work, as they were about the same size and proportions as your 69 Coronet. The G.M. box-wagons are also about the same for size and proportion, too.
Bumping this up because I wanted to let everyone know that if you're looking for a 1968-1970 Mopar B-Body wagon car cover, I've found a decent, affordable solution for you: A company called autoarmourauctions sells car covers that have various "layers" on Ebay. I purchased a "6-layer" cover for a 1989-1995 Chevrolet Caprice Wagon from them for $54.99 with free shipping. I did a lot of research on size of the B-Body wagon versus size of the Box and Round Caprice wagons and I am happy to report that it fits my 1969 Coronet wagon almost perfectly. The cover is reasonably priced, seems to be very good quality and passed a test of me pouring water on the seams and it not leaking. It also includes 4 well-wrapped grommets that allow you to tie the cover over the car and even the cord to tie it to the car with! I am now purchasing another couple of covers from AutoArmourAuctions for my 1969 Coronet Coupe (a 7-layer) and my father's 1995 F150 Shortbed (another 6-layer). I expect them to be high quality items as well, but I will report if they are not since I am here endorsing them. If nothing else, you should know that if you are the owner of one of these big B-Body wagons, Caprice Wagon car covers will fit your car for less than a custom-made cover.
Thanks. That is great news and a very good price. I buy the super cheap universal car covers at swap meets just to cover our cars in the garages. I also use one of the $25-$30 covers when staying at motels for car events. They don't keep rain off but I feel better from prying eyes. Yours sound like great covers for longer term storage.
