    Hello Everyone!

I joined this forum because I purchased a 68 Ford Country sedan with a 390 and an FMX. My HS students have been working on getting this thing back on the road and we discovered the transmission had been grenanded before. I went on the hunt for a good forum with plenty of info on the FMX rebuild with pictures for the students to dig into in their efforts to piece a good trans together. I picked up two FMX trans from a gearhead named Paul in Delaware and they happened to be out of his 72 351 Mustang and one out of a 73 351 Mustang that was wrecked and picked for parts. The kids have gone through the bad trans and taken out the shift linkage and the long tail shaft, and cleaned up as much of the parts as possible to use in the FrankenTrans.

We've run into a few snags with parts being slightly damaged from the original trans and not knowing where some of the parts belong. We have the OEM Ford service manual, but it is not clear where some of these parts go. I have been using Machmeter1's thread on the other forum to help ID pictures of the parts and show the students (http://www.7173mustangs.com/thread-overh...smission), but I havent been able to find out where some of the parts go. Maybe someone here can help! I hope to get this thing fired up and have my students practice using the forum as a source of information and experience.

One other thing!! The wagon has power brake with discs up front. The students are almost done plumbing the entire system, but are in need of pictures to help them put the booster back on. They seem to have lost the pin that attaches the booster to the pedal. I will be adding pictures soon!

Well! Welcome to the madness digit! This sounds really interesting, FMX...that's a 3 speed right? What about a later model AOD trans for that old wagon to help boost the dismal MPG's a little? I have no idea if'n that'll work??

I bet you get some good replies here from possibly transmission pros or maybe even Ford techs? Thanks for working with the kids! :)

Keep us posted on your progress! (y)

There is kits available from a place in Minnesota that allow the very durable AOD to be installed behind virtually any Ford engine you can name. With an AOD, that big wagon could give you a real surprise with the highway mileage. That in itself may be an interesting topic to pursue; how to get maximum mileage out of these big old cars.

Welcome canudigit. I think you and your students will find this to be a wealth of information and advice. We had another auto tech teacher on here, I guess it was two years ago, and he'd give us updates on his and his student's restoration of a '58 Ranch wagon. When they were done with it, another member of the forum bought it and still has it. I'd love to watch your progress so post some pictures, please.
