50 years ago today I worked for Supreme Bakers, late Keibler. I was in a small hotel west of Peoria. Illinois ready to write up a cookie/cracker order when I heard the news.
About 10:15 / 10:30AM, pacific time or so, Mr. Nowak's drafting class at Mark Twain Jr. High School, Los Angeles, CA. (I was in the 7th grade). Announcement came over the PA. Lunch area a little later was not surprisingly very quiet. I believe school was dismissed early. Uneasiness in the air. Same feeling I got on Sept. 11th, 2001. -------------------------------------------------- If you get a chance, I recommend reading Stephen King's '11.22.63'.
after the hrpt2012 i stopped at the school book depository museum and it is incredible. what also amazes me is the way historical things are treated in Texas. having visited here and the Alamo were both incredible experiences. though i was only 1 1/2 yrs old at the time it is still something i can relate to. I would say MLK's asassination is the first major news event i can remember as a kid
I was in grade 1....I still remember our teacher getting called out to the hall...she came back in with tears in her eyes and told the class. We sat in silence for about 5 minutes...then she told us of his accomplishments during his life. Im Canadian...and I still recall it.
From which windows were the 2nd and third shots fired? That grassy knoll thing is a theory subject to debate. Forensic experts once filled an object with forensic jelly and fired into it, disproving a possibility of getting shot from the front. JFK's twitching backwards could have been caused from a hit nerve comanding neck muscles to jerk the head backwards
I was in 4th grade and home sick from school when I heard/saw it on tv. I ran upstairs and told my mom and she scolded me, badly as I recall, for saying such a terrible thing. I was so insistent she finally turned on her "portable" Zenith, (the thing weighed about 150 lbs), and discovered I hadn't made it up. Certainly was an awful thing.
I was in a geography class, in Quebec French school, watching a TV documentary. Suddenly another teacher told us to flip to CBC (public broadcaster), to see the scene. It was an all-boys class, but there wasn't a dry eye in there. Awful! Unforgettable... When the book came out - The Making of A President. It was on the reading list in most schools, for History classes. By then I was in an English college, and a lot of the guys would ask the girls if they wanted to be "made" president. I always wonder if JFK would have delivered on his commitments.
There's been some curiosity on this, not that it really matters now..... One theory I saw on a TV program suggested that Kennedy would not have allowed the U.S. to get heavily involved in Viet Nam. Of course that chain of events would have led to other world events changing. Everything's connected.
He was planning a pull-out from Vietnam, suggesting the assassination was sponsored by the Hawks at the top brass
