Well...if it were me...I would stay away from any used 99 or 2000 engine. Frankly, I would look for a 2.0 or 2.2 engine. They ran for 300K without incident religiously. They gave Subaru their great name. Or jump up to at least a 2004, 2.5 if possible. That's just me. I'm not telling you what to do at all. Whatever you get... replace the timing belt, water pump and ALL related pullies with new ones. Subaru's are long running rigs, unfortunately EXCEPT, for the year you happened to buy. Good luck.

I hear ya. I am now using my mother in laws 92 legacy with 296,000 miles and it runs like a champ! That car is what convinced me to buy the outback in the first place. Little did I know right?? What all is involved in swapping to a SOHC engine like the 2.2 in her legacy which I found out is a non interference engine.. I would much rather have a less powerful more reliable engine than that crap I have now. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Too auto and too new to be a reliable Subie in my opinion.
Like others, I have a 94 AWD 5spd wagon with 200K that has weathered extremely well. Till the clutch exploded, but that's not it's fault exactly. :)

PPI is the name of the ebay car game though, Pre Purchase Inspection.
