Throttle valve linkage, but yes that is it. I would also check the cable itself. I don't think it should be able to stick out like that. I had a cable break on a T-Bird a few years ago. If the cable is okay then you might get lucky and just be able to hook it back up. To check the tv pressure you have to get under the car to hook up a line to a pressure tap on the side of the trans. You didn't notice any strange shifting issues other than the o/d problem?
Hook a 50 lb pressure gauge to the center plug on the trans body and test the pressure. It should be around 35 lbs in neutral at idle. I had an AOL do the same thing and the pressure was low. You could ruin the trans if the TV cable is mal-adjusted for just a short period of time so check it quick or go have it done at a shop. Good luck. Dave
Well, took my baby in to the mechanic this morning. Not due to look at it until tomorrow but I am off today so dropped it off. Keeping my fingers crossed. mike
Got an initial report. It looks like the tranny may be OK. They didn't have a proper bushing on hand but connected it up with a temporary lash in order to test it and did have O/D. They are going to order a brass bushing. I had them do a general checkup and they did find a list of the normal kinds of things that you would expect to find in a car of this age. A leak here and there, front brakes, torn ball joint boot etc. They were quite impressed with the condition of the undercarriage and frame. So far they haven't been able to locate a tailgate window seal (the one attached to the body) which needs replacing so I may need some help from you guys in locating one. Over all I am very encouraged as I think we are going to have a very solid keeper for a quite reasonable investment. They will be emailing a detailed price estimate for each item so that we can decide what to do now and what we might want to put off. mike
You better go out and invest in a lotto ticket tonight. Many an AOD has been shredded by driving with that bushing in the condition yours was. I'm glad your trans hopefully doesn't need any internal work.
I told the mechanic to take his time but in reality I am champing at the bit to get my baby back. It was an interesting time when I went back into the shop to have him show me what he found. We are in a town of only 12,000 people but he must have a dozen bays and I saw, in addition to my CP and a couple of pedestrian melted butter cars, a Spitfire 1500 with the engine in the process of being rebuilt, A Fiat 124 Spyder, and a Ferrari Testarossa (not to be confused with the Testa Rossa). I lovely as those mid engine Ferrari's are I doubt that I could get out of one on my own if I ever managed to get in. mike
We are waiting for the brass bushing to come in which should be in within the next day or so. Worth the wait in my opinion. Once we are sure on the tranny we will be doing the brakes and replacing the radiator. While they have the radiator out we will be removing the little bit of rust on the support and painting it to protect from coolant spills and leaks in the future. I will put off the rest to see what I may be able to handle on my own once I get a factory service manual. Will do the A/C in the spring probably. I am also considering blasting and painting the underside next summer. It seems like it would help keep rust from getting a foothold as long as it was examined and refreshed each year and cause less trouble for the mechanics than coating with grease. mike
Have him do a pressure check on the trans with it in neutral. At about 1/4 inch of movement off the lower part of the throttle, he should have 35 lbs pressure Hook the gauge up to the center pressure plug on the tranny body. And get a spacer tool from lokar to make sure you have the distance right. I think it might be out of adjustment. Dave
Took quite a while to get the bushing but they have it in and have started the brakes and radiator. Should have her back early in the week. I am really going into withdrawal. mike
I got my baby back! I got her back tonight. Picked her up after work but won't have a change to do any cruisin' until tomorrow. mike
