Hey guys, when I originally bought my '76 Montego wagon, it had an aftermarket steering wheel. Originally, I thought they had replaced the original wheel due to a worn out horn pad. I found an NOS horn pad, and attempted to swap out the wheel yesterday. Looks like there may be a horn/electrical issue with the original wheel. After I tighten down the original wheel, and hook the battery back up, something sounds like it's shorting out under the wheel. What do I need to do to fix this? I'm thinking it may be the horn contacts in the wheel. I think the posts that stick up from the column are OK, as they were working fine with the aftermarket wheel. Also, any idea where I can find the part(s) to fix this? Thanks in advance. Trying to get this worked out before a car show this weekend.

Sounds like the horn button is being pushed with out being pushed.. What I mean is the horn mechanism is shorted out in the wheel. Happened to me. Found that it was mashed together.

When you put it back together, feel the horn relay. If this is getting hot, then yes, you have an issue in the wheel ..

Thanks for the input. I took it back out, and put the aftermarket back in, for now. Til I have time to dig into it further. Trying to figure out where to find new contact rings/brushes.
