Drove my '63 Safari out to the POCI Convention in Ohio 2 weeks ago. Before I left, I went over the car and did a good "once over", fuel lines, heater/radiator hoses, belts, plugs, wires, oil change, coolant.Total trip was about 1100 miles. The 10 hour drive to Dayton seemed like 2 hrs, not sure if it was the challenge of a long ride in a 50 year old car or the fun I had running through the gears through the West VA mountains. What I do know is I had a blast. Everywhere I stopped I had admirers stop and talk. Plenty to do when I got there and the trip back was also a great time with no issues. Looking forward to the next trip. Here's a shot of the car out on front of the US Air Force Museum, which was also awesome and a must-see.
Your car looks beautiful! Glad to hear it was such a fun trip. I agree; the Air Force Museum is a "must-see" if you're in the Dayton area. My wife and I visited during the last Co-vention (POCI & GTOAA) in 2009; awesome museum!
Gorgeous wagon. Oh man, a POCI convention I am so envious! I gotta get mine back on the road, I do miss the road trips. As you say, the hours fly by when you are having fun in your Poncho wagon
Thanks, that '57 is awesome. Had Pontiacs for over 20 years and this my my first nationals. Why did i wait so long? :banghead3: And I thought that statement was just an old saying, but it can be translated literally! the hours did fly by!
Well, I'm feeling totally jealous right now! Just kidding, glad you had a great trip. Does that Safari have the original radio and speakers in it? Post up some detail dash if its not too much trouble?
Beautiful wagon. 4 speed I asume? What rear gear ratio are you running? Are you on the PY forums too? That was a nice road trip in a 50 year old wagon!
MotoMike: Yes, original AM/FM (first year for that) Front and optional rear speaker, with the switch. I just replaced the front which probably was original with an Electro-Tech exact replacement with a high performance magnet. Sounds pretty great (for 50 year old tech) I'll post some pix. rsavage: Super fun to drive with the stick. I was mostly thrilled because of the trouble trip Correct T-10 and shifter, I think was called a "spagetti" shifter because it's thin, round with unique bends. Even with the power bench seat, it lays perfectly when in 2nd/4th. 3:08 open rear. I am on PY, barrierblue66
Here are 2 dash pix. Factory tach, factory am/fm (first year), rear speaker switch, '65 GP gauge cluster with AutoMeter oil and water, and factory clock fixed by me and is NOT a quartz conversion.
Thanks! I could spend hours just sitting in that car! The AM/FM, does the dial flip between the bands when one or the other is selected?
Mid 60's Pontiacs did have beautiful dashes and interiors. This year radio didnt do the flippy, AM band graduations right above the FM band
I have just heard from Bob Munson(tonsajunk) that the http://www.pontiacnationals.com/ are in Norwalk- any chance you are attending that? Its a trifecta of BOC in Ohio that weekend 8/1/14- Oldsmobiles in Cincinnati (Eastgate), Pontiacs in Norwalk and my beloved Buick Performance Group in Hebron OH at National Trail Raceway.
Hey Ted, I have a room reserved and plan to drive my Safari to OH again. Excellent to see these BOP events going on!
