There was a beater 95 wagon for sale here, asking 600 OBO, I call talk to the guy,he says that he has promised to sell it to someone on Monday, he says he is a man of his word,so he is going to hold it until Monday and them promised to call me to let me know what happened. Car is sold as of last night. Ad on kijiji, car for sale, owner finally replies, says he will get around to showing me the car, he will let me know, car is still available, putting me off seeing the car. Wagon for sale, locally, I call and speak to owner, says he will be at shop on a certain day,not there, I leave a written note with lady there,no response, call, leave message no response, leave note on seat of unlocked car, very interested, ect, ect, no response, car now sold. Car goes up on kijiji,I am second person to view it, and respond, email right away with my phone number,no response, patiently wait, then send another email, reply says ,yes, received my emails, but working on selling car right now, will let me know. I am trying to be paitent with people but do I need to be uber pushy or what? I realize that generally the seller is in the drivers seat, but why are some people so hard to deal with? If you have a serious local buyer, why do you want to go through so much hassle trying to sell? I guess I just keep plugging away......
For a cheap transportation vehicle, it's usually the first one with the cash wins.........so be prepared the first time you see it. Another option - don't wait for an ad or a 'For Sale' sign. If you see something you may want, ask the owner if it's for sale. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.
I did that with the 87 olds. I have scoped out a couple RMW on my motorcycle rides and I am not shy to go up and knock on the door with a smile!
If I may make a suggestion: Look for older cars still. Ones that are vulnerable to the demo derby crowd. Often times, a 'beater car' has too much sentimental value for the seller to allow a demo derby person to buy it, but when you promise to keep and look after the old car they are more than happy to sell. When I call about an old car, I always make a point of saying how much I love that particular make and model of car and how much I really want one of my own. That is how I got Bertha (78 Grand Marquis), Nora (78 Thunderbird) and Chloe (79 Thunderbird). In the case of Bertha and Chloe, the sellers had been called by the derby crowd and refused to give their address to show the car. As soon as they heard enthusiasm for THAT car, they were more than happy to sell to me, and in one case I had to talk them UP in price as they came down too far when they saw I loved the car and would take care of it.
Ha, that's funny. My sport bike,a 2000 Honda car 600 was getting long in the tooth,I had dropped it a couple of times and it had over 130,000 k on it, a death knell to the sport bike crowd. Never mind that its a Honda and, btw, my BF s VFR has over 180,000 k on it, and I didn't want to put an ad up for it. I loved that bike and it had been such a good soldier that I hung onto it for over 3 years,I didn't want it to be sold to a stunter. I sold it to a friend a couple years ago for a fair price who loves it and its still going strong at over 140,00 k doesn't burn a drop of oil. I know every wagon within a 75 miles radius of my house......
Man I wish you lived close, have I got a deal for you.... I'll take $2k, but because I like you I'll take $3K instead
theshnizzle it may be helpful if we knew where roughly 75 miles from your house is to help locate a decent station wagon. At least what state and which end of the state you are in. Most of us are harmless and are only here to help others spend money.
Jesss, I've followed your posts so I know you are from Ontario but that's a pretty big place, Cat has a point as your threads do kinda bounce around and can be a bit difficult to follow. We are here to help, we don't want anyone buying a problem car But if you want to spend more than the owner wants........ we all can get you a car fast...J/K Sellers are a bugger, some of them any way. But I think it was KK who said some thing to the effect of first come first serve and all ways have cash in hand. Not saying carry $5000 in your pocket, but maybe $1-2. But please be patient and don't jump into the spur of the moment as it can come back to haunt you
See, I've already narrowed down where she lives. And I'm actually guessing she is a SHE because she mentioned a boyfriend. Again, I am guessing! A lot of guys have boyfriends. Am I digging a hole I cant get out of?
LOL,oh its exhausting trying to be politically correct! I live about an hour east of Toronto. I have been looking in PA and NY as well. But the car would have to be super cheap to compensate for the added costs of importing across the border, which, if you follow the steps, is a pretty simple procedure. So much choice in the states!! You guys are so lucky! I have seen so many nice cars at a decent price on " zoomthe list" a CL search engine. I find the Florida cars pretty pricey actually. I still may go for the neighbours car, it is in good shape and I can drive it while swapping out parts and you cant beat the convenience of it being walking distance.
Most of us here are always politically correct.............. Yes, walking distance saves much time and expense. Just be sure it's in decent shape and what you really want. Maybe some pictures of the neighbor's car first so a few members can warn you, encourage you, or make suggestions.
Update.....I was the second viewer of the 95 RMW with the car agar wheels ect and the guy never contacted me, I waited patiently, emailed him the next day, asking status, he replies that he is working on a sale right then. ...sigh In his ad he said he also had a 92 RMW,rough but serviceable,so I email and ask him about that car,and btw,did he sell the other one? Reply, is he got frustrated with all the lowball offers and no shows and has removed them for sale. What! In my first email I expressed my strong interest, said I was a car forum member, had a RMW already, gave my full name and phone number ,spelled everything correctly, none of this " give u 1500 cash" crap. And I get lumped in with all the rest of the flotsam and jetsam. Give me a break......
I sent you a reply and answered some other messages. Wonder if you received yours? I can't find anyplace that shows I sent ANY messages out. Thanks to those who did write. Basically I wrote you that either car seemed reasonable but without photos couldn't really say which. To me older is better and usually has less electrical gremlins.
