This is the new set of 3:88's that is going under the rear of my wagon. It has a very nice set of Richmond Gear lockright lockers in it. I didn't trust the 50 year old gears in the original rear end so I bought a brand new and freshly cut set of clean and perfect spider gears from the local auto parts store and they fit together like the were born there!! I love the sound of a good locker set and am going to have to begin my new search for an overdrive trans to keep from spinning the engine over 3800 RPM's at 60 miles per hour! So put the word out that I am looking for an 80-ish Ford AOD tranny for sale' I would prefer one with a converter and at least rebuild able condition. Hows about y'all give me the once over a tell me what you think.
You might want to consider a 4R70W instead. Yes it's electronic, but controllers aren't too expensive. The V6's use the same bolt pattern as the SBF, but internal are the same as the V8 versions. Here's a How-To on another forum. http://www.fordmuscleforums.com/tra...verdrive-transmission-older-classic-ford.html
I would think that a mechanical AOD is going to be as common as dirt. Some were factory equipped with the linkage for the kick down rod of a carburetor instead of the cable of the fuel injected cars. With the kick down rod, and good maintenance, I have seen these AODs last in excess of 500,000 miles
DUAL QUAD DAVE: that 3:88 & OD of .07 will be 2.71 final drive:2_thumbs_up_-_anima EDIT: If I figured correctly!
I have a set of 28x9.5x14 in slicks that I got brand new and cheap because of the size. With the gears they should be pretty cool. Dave
Dave: with 28" tall tires,, & assume 2:71 as final drive with .070 OD the cruzin rpm at 70 mph would be 2,276
Bought an AOD out of a 90 lincoln MIII today for $100.00 bucks! Car is running too! Guy is junking the car because he can't afford the airbags! Good? Bad? Tell me if I did good or not?!
That is the same AOD as the Mustang 5.0 used. Same drive train, come to that. Sounds like a great car, and maybe well worth saving if the rest of the car is in good shape. Just ditch the air ride suspension, since it is an expensive proposition to keep working. The V8 Thunderbird/Cougar struts and springs are a direct fit.
I am not going to keep the Lincoln. I just wanted the transmission. I think I could do well with a mechanical overdrive in the car to lower the rpm's at freeway speeds. I am going to give it the once over before I give it a try. The C4 is going to have to do for now until the end of this season. Especially since my new discovery regarding my starter post. Take a look if you get a chance. Dave.
