A lot has happened the last few months.
the 400cui engine in my Grand Safari runs ok but this thing is an alcoholic.
25 liters / 100km
and this is to much.
But one by one...
many new parts have found place in the Station.
new Springs


all new at the brake system


new fuel tank and many many more.
also new wheels

I want to use my car every day without having to be bankrupt because of the petrol prices.
I'm not a original fanatic, so i change the engine, a engine that is good and reliable.

25 litres per 100 kms??!!! YIKES!! Something was certainly wrong there! My Bertha, with a Ford 400 is using 12 - 13 litres per 100 kms, and that is a car about the same size and weight as your wagon. That is also before I get to doing up grades that will decrease the fuel consumption. By the time I am done, I'm aiming for 7.5 - 8 litres per 100 km out of Bertha, and more later when much more serious upgrades are required.

That new engine is looking good. You realize that the best way to make a big difference to the fuel consumption is to get over drive in there, either by way of an external GearVenders overdrive or by building up a 200R4 or a 700R4 transmission with locking torque converter. That alone should knock about 5 or 6 litres off the fuel use per 100 kms on the highway.

I have a funny feeling your carburetor was running rich, and you may well have had the timing set too far retarded for economy. Both are common problems with cars from the 70s.

 

I like the 200-4r. The lock up feature is nice.

 

Forneby your rides lookin great what Mike and Zilla said also check the diff ratio highway/town driving as it have to tall or to low gears for your needs

rear axle ratio is 2.73 and with the TH700R4 a great combo:banana:

 

NOT into that exaust comming out under the gas tank! Dunno but seems like that could cause quite a few diff probs.

I don't know the liter per kilo thing, but is that a CCC as a carb?? Why??
The 400 with a Q-jet was good for around 15 MPG - maybe you should get one, as with those small primaries really wake 'em up!
Adjust idle with a vacuum guage, [highest possible] and make sure the vacuum advance is working.

the 400cui Pontiac original engine was very tired, and i have no idea to spend a lot of money in this tired an old grandpa.
i´m not a absolute newbie and i´m a chevy small block fanatic

 

Find a q-jet and manifold and watch the mileage soar!
Best I could do with the CCC was 20 mpg on a 305 - with a reprogrammer, K+N, Flowmaster, and driving like an old lady!
Found little things like 35 lb. of air in the tires made a difference.

 

Yess.. Skellefteå is my hometown for now. Where do you live? I am also doing the csb/tbi/TH700/2,73 setup.. I think it works great until i put the trailer behind it, then the gear is too low, will try smaller reartires next season, might just do the trick...

 

Forneby, where did you purchased the leaf springs? Did you already installed them?
