I have been searching for a dog for several months now. Perhaps I'm being to picky, I don't remember it ever being this difficult to find a dog(or puppy). Actually it's not that I can't find them, they are out there, but I can't bring myself to pay upwards of $400 for a mixed breed dog from someone on Kijiji. I have a hard time bringing myself to pay that much for a purebred and the purebreds are going for twice that and more.
Another dilemma is I don't seem to be fast enough. I've been a regular on petfinder and Kijiji for the last little while. When I see a dog/pup that seems to fit the bill they either don't answer my request or the dog is already adopted. For example, last Friday evening I find a 7 month old male German Shephard pup, perfect! They are asking $275 he's been neutered, and needled, vet checked head to toe. He's at a shelter so I'm sure all of the above is true. First thing Saturday morning I sent off an email, cause they are about 1 1/2 hours away and they don't open until 1:00, I just wanted to give them a heads up that I'm coming. About 12:00 I get an email back saying he's been adopted. So Saturday afternoon #3 and I go to 2 SPCAs and 1 dog pound looking for 3 dogs I had seen on petfinders, all three of these walk out the door with other people as we get there, not lying, at one place I actually held the door open so they could walk out.
Last night I sent an email off about a 12 week old puppy(they had 3 to give away)and they haven't answered yet!
This evening I came across a 2yr old female GS. The family has to find a home because one of their kids has developed allergies. I called her, spoke to her for about 15 minutes asked all kinds of questions. She says she's just getting her kids settled for bed but then she'll email me a video of the dog...that was 4 hours ago.
While I was waiting for her to respond I sent off two more emails to folks that had just posted their dogs with in minutes of me finding them...still nothing. About mid week I filled out a adoption reqest(on line) it was 62 questions long took me about 1 1/2 hours to fill it out...the dog was adopted to someone else.
    I don't think I'm meant to have a dog...so disappointing...

Do you remember when you used to see dirty pieces of paper on a bulletin board people almost begging you to take their puppies, man I'm here to tell you those days are gone.

Sorry to hear of your difficulties in finding a dog. I've adopted 3 dogs from shelters and can't say I have had those difficulties. I didn't go in with an idea of type or size of dog, they all seemed to pick me. Be patient, the right dog is out there for you.
These 3 came from the Broward County Humane Society. Betsy on the right was my first dog. She is now with my ex and I miss her(the dog). Bear, on the left, was my second dog and unfortunately is no longer with us. He went from being afraid to step in wet grass to swimming in every canal he could find. Jack was my third dog and I still have him. He's 11 and still full of energy. He can drive me crazy at times.

This dog was a stray that a friend found wondering the streets. We posted flyers everywhere and notified all the shelters in the county and couldn't bring her to a shelter. She' an absolute sweetheart and when I'm home she is usally by my side, like she is right now. She's a chihuahua, her name is Chichi.

I started what was clearly a rant...( revised it).....but not towards you, fannie:) But "the other kind of pet owners and some, but not all...well 98.5% of breader$"....well IMO Breader = Puppy mill = no better than a used car lots salesman! Tell ya anything you want to hear, just fork over the ca$h

So many animals get kicked to the kirb so to say, by owners who wanted that perfect....thought it would be a walk in the park but can't be bothered.... didn't factor in you have to feed the animal...vets......how about LOVE?!?. To then realize but not except the fact they have no clue and should not own a pet perioud, so lets just throw it away.

And then a person like you fannie, who would give a pet....not make it a pet but a member of the family, and you have a hard time finding one, just because you were not the first one there:( Both Deb and I have experienced that,

Hang in there fannie....you'll have the most OMG what did they do while I was out....... best trusted friend, who you will trust alone with anything and not worry before long.

    Magor :tiphat:, for you fannie

Geeze....I DO remember when people were trying to give dogs away for free! I had no idea that dogs were for sale for big bucks now days. Seems to me that there are a lot of them around the streets of big cities and in shelters and, yet, people want money for their, apparently, special pups! I know that you want a certain breed etc, fannie.....but, take home the dog that chooses you. You will know it when it happens. Good luck.(y)

Fannie: The right dog is out there, waiting for you. You will meet when the time is right. I have never gone out to get a dog. They find me. Sometimes, they even follow me home. Literally! Basically, that is how I got my current beagles. Hurley needed a home, and I was asked if I would take him. Effie was on her way to the pound when I got here. 2 minutes earlier or later, and she would have been at the pound. Keep up the good hunt, and you SHALL be rewarded. After al, you have the wagon, now you need the dogs. I have the dogs, but really do need a wagon!

This is my Hurley, aged about a year. He's 6, and still looks pretty much the same. Little Imp that he is.

And here is Effie when I got her. Keeping her still for a photo is a challenge even now.

I knew you guys would understand, the pictures of your dogs are sweet. Maybe I am looking to hard and I do have a certain breed in mind. That would be a lab/husky/shephard mix maybe with a dash of border collie. I don't want a small dog, something bigger then my cat. But I don't want a large dog, I don't have alot of room in my house. Just something furry, cuddley with soft brown eyes that wants to go for a walk after work, tease the cat while I'm at work and will sit and read SWF posts with me.
I have asked so many people if they know anyone giving away puppies, it's getting so that some of my coworkers turn and go the other way when they see me coming, I'm sure it's because they don't want to hear me whining. I feel like those guys on the hair color commercials..."rejected".

Maybe I can teach my cat to lean out the passenger side with her tongue out...all that fur she'd probable blow away...better not. My cat is a great pet, she meets me at the door when I come, bugs me for a treat before I get my shoes off but she is still independant, she only sits with me on her terms, usually when I'm knitting and I don't do that much, she won't sit beside me she sits on me. But she doesn't bark, she never wants to go out to pee and she usually disappears when people stop in, sounds like the perfect furry family member...right?

We'll see how it works out.

[IMG] We don't want a dog, or any pet. My wife has me and that's more than she can handle. We have five acres in the country and a fenced yard. Perfect. However I hate seeing dogs left alone while people, like us, go away for days, even weeks.
I didn't know it was that difficult to find pets. On Saturdays we have a thing on radio called "Swap Shop". People are begging others to take their dogs, many free, many cheap. Yes, some very expensive. But the free and cheap ones are listed every Saturday. Also we have a "Thrifty Nickle" paper with pets listed the same ways.
Keep looking fannie. Your doggie is in the window..... You just have to keep looking.

Fannie - try writing to the local newspaper and telling them your story. They love this stuff, and I'll bet you get a dog(s) offered up pretty quickly.

We've always had cats - all adopted because they no longer had a home. In 43 years we've always had at least one until our last little guy passed in Sept. at 17 yo He was of all of them the most expressive, at 15 started going camping with us, riding either at the passengers feet or on the console, quite content. He didn't care too much for the wagon trips though as it is a tad noisier and no A/C to keep him in the manner to which he liked to be accustomed.

As CAT said, you might also find something through local radio sales/give away shows, perhaps mention it at church or social clubs, people you work with, someone will have just the little dog you want and it will get a family that loves it.

The harder it is to find the right one the more treasured it will be.

fannie i can relate we went thru hell trying to get a dog
1- found a dog at the aspca . got along great with the kids but he was cat agressive so we couldn't have him
2 - same thing with another one
3- went to a shepherd rescuefound a dog they declined me because i had a dog house so they interperted that to meanhe would live outside. didnt matter that code enforcement had me build a bigger doghouse then the rubbermaid one i bought because my dog was outside during the day for more then an hour
4- found a great dog thru craigslist 2 weeks later he comes down with distemper and we have to put him down
5- finally find the shepherd we have now thru craigslist
6 - found a mut to keep the shepherd company

have faith theright onewill come along
