This is very good advice and something our son finally learned after many replacement electric in-tank fuel pumps. He was running them very low and sometimes out of fuel. Never let the tank get below 1/4 full. The fuel cools the fuel pump motor. A stupid invention but one we have to live with. Fuel injection and electronic ignition. So great. Yet we seem to spend more on up keep and our gas mileage is lower. Progress? Gimme a good Model A Ford.
Thanks for the fuel pump advise guys! I have owned a roadmaster wagon since new and we have 252,000 miles on this beast. I have replaced 3 fuel pumps. The factory one quit at 160,000 miles. the second one (carter) went 5000 miles and quit. on warranty replaced it (did all the work myself) and this one went about 3500 and then.......dead! Every time with a full tank of gas and I NEVER let the tank go below 1/2. Pump #3 was an AC delco at 168,000 miles and that has been the last one to date (now at 252,000miles). My daughters car has 190,000 on it and the hanger unit was bad (lines badly rusted) so I replaced it with a new one (spectra). The pump that was in the old one was a newer AC delco unit and was working fine. At the time I was doing the work I was actually thinking of putting the AC unit inside the spectra hanger. But I asked myself why would I put in an old feul pump in a new hanger? I wish I did now!!! I am sure that pump would still be working. Assuming the original one quit at around the same time our other one did this one would have had roughly 40,000 miles on it (thats nothing for a good quality unit). So now I am just hoping to find someone honest enough to do the work for her and not try and screw her over. Again will keep you all posted. take care Dan
Man....what a shame, Dan. I remember all the work you did on that wagon to get it ready for your daughter's trip to school. I know the feeling you have when looking for an honest mechanic that knows what he's doing. Good luck!
For several years, I went to a UAP/NAPA shop. I got fed up with having to redo repairs on that car. Almost every NAPA part they installed had to be replaced, usually just after the warranty ran out. They are my store of last resort now.
We used to have a LEE auto parts here in town. They are a high end store that sells the OEM factory or top end aftermarket parts. The problem with them is that they ARE high end and the prices show it. I would shop there but the store was always empty. The store we have now are auto zone (yuk) advance (that is what I ahve been using) and Napa (my last resort as well). We also have carquest but they are in such a bad location and they never have anything in stock so I don't even bother. At this point I have been buying parts from the dealer (OUCH!!) But i know they fit and will work.
In our tiny town we had an AutoZone. For some reason not many customers seemed to know it was there. Didn't last. But why do most Carquest stores end up in the "wrong end of town"? The one here was obviously very old, recently remodeled, just before it closed down. I liked that place and the help. Our Advanced Auto is like touring a Kindergarten class. Almost always some new help who really don't know for sure what an automobile is. Having 4-doors does seem very important though! The NAPA seems to be our best choice. But no one seems to have American made products, or even decent off-shore made things that even last till the waurantee is out. Yes, we are being forced to buy dealer sold parts. But they come from the same containers from far far away.
Two dead roadmasters!!! No not yet. She has not had the time (classes) to look up a mechanic. We sent down the fuel pump and it should be there on friday. Our other roadmaster quit this morning (I getting really done with this). The water pump (yes a "new" aftermarket one) started puking antifreeze all over the highschool parking lot. This one made a whole 8 months. when it rains in pours!!!! Now I have two dead roadmaster wagons one is 1100 miles away and the other is bleeding in the driveway (OH JOY). Have a nice evening boys and girls Dan needs a stiff drink right now take care.
Condolences Big Dan, I been dealing with starter problems on our 13yo Murray lawn tractor. Replaced the OE starter at 10 yrs with a "deal" I got from an outfit on the Internet. The drive gear lasted 3 months, replaced it with a genuine Briggs gear and it lasted 3 yrs. Popped another genuine Briggs gear on it and it lasted a grand total of 3 weeks! Did I mention the replacement starter box said "Made in China" on it?? So yesterday I got a genuine Briggs starter, the box says "Made in Canada" on it?? Cranks great so far. Can we trust Canadian parts??
["Made in Canada" on it?? Cranks great so far. Can we trust Canadian parts??[/QUOTE] I have had great luck with canadian parts I consider them as good as American. I am sick of putting chinese parts on my american car!!!! ordered the replacement water pump for the DK cherry roadmaster. I will touch base with Nicole to see if she is making any headway with setting up a mechanic for her roadmaster. (I wish these two cars where lower miles...sigh)
I get all my parts form orielly auto they have a ffew brands including acdelco, delphi and borg warner Good prices, been running parts from there for a long time haven,t had a problem although I never buy the house brand
Update!! Well Nicole had the roadmaster towed to a shop about 1/2 mile from the school ($75). They are going to install the AC delco pump we supplied for $173. The insurance will cover the tow and I am going to get some money back on the pump. (The pump was a part of a complete hanger assembly) Anything I get back the plan is to reinburse Nicole. They said she could have the car Sat evening or Monday Morning. She gave them some room to play with there schedule since she really dosen't need the car to get around for school. So i will keep ya all posted! Remember kid's BUY AMERICAN!!!!!
Easy for you to say Dan! This is turning into a sad sad world!:banghead3S I was sort of raised in Illinois. Directly across from what was called Peking, China.
