Is this on your Oldsmobile? It will live without a cap if you have to drive it like that. Otherwise a parts store (Autozone, NAPA, etc.) should have a replacement for you.

I always change gas caps when I buy a car anyway, and put a locking one on. Too often I've had folks think, ah, big tank, he'll never notice. One thankless creature even replaced the gas with water, which of course froze at -15C, and wrecked the fuel pump.

Ouch!!! That stinks. Some people's children...:naughty:

lorkav, you should definitely be able to find a replacement, as Kevin said.

Changing caps to a locking cap is a good idea...especially as the price of gas skyrockets. My Cadillac has the filler behind the license plate...and the license plate has a lock to prevent it from being moved...works with the power door locks...lock the doors and the license plate locks in place...unlock the doors to unlock the plate. It has a mechanism in the trunk to manually lock/unlock, as well. I've never seen such a thing.

Another reason to get a locking cap is that you have the key on your car key ring. When you fill, the key stays in the cap while it's sitting on your car. You can't leave without getting your keys back, so it is an extra reminder to replace your cap.

I've been lucky and haven't had a lost cap or had gas stolen...fingers crossed it stays that way.

Here in Oregon, we don't pump our own gas...it's against the law. Last week, I filled up and the attendant somehow managed to catch the bottom corner of the license plate and bent it up, whilst gashing the plastic filler panel in the process. I didn't notice it until the next day or so...

I remember back in Illinois, most of midwest probably, when we pumped our own we saved 5 cents a gallon! Wonder how much we are saving now that most places we have to pump our own, get no windows washed, tires, oil, or water checked? No more green stamps or free water glass or other items with every 10 gallons.
And making matters worse, when paying cash, have to walk inside prepay, walk out pump fuel, walk back inside to get change if not using it all! All the while waiting for some semi-intellegent attendant to sell cigarettes, lotto tickets, candy, etc to other semi intellegent non-fuel buying people.:rofl2: PS Always buy a locking gas cap. Keeps the semi intellegent folks from borrowing your fuel, putting water, sticks, sugar or other things in your tank.
After all, this ain't Mayberry RFD!

Topher: I had a 78 Buick Electra Limited, and that same locking plate mechanism was an option THEN. I've never seen one, but it makes perfect sense. On my cars, it is locking filler door or locking cap, no questions about it. I drive my beasts, not look at them, and NOBODY is going to judge them. They'd loose too many points off the top before they even noticed the cap. Hell, anyone judging Nora would tell me to scrap her. She runs so bloody well, though!

    Still sad about gas cap..

Thanks for all the good advice. Sorry it took me FOREVER to reply. I work alot. haha... I was bummed because I had a METAL gas cap. :( I was hoping to replace it w/ an original type. I can buy the other kind....plastic....just seems so...modern and wimpy , kinda. LOL sigh.... Oh well, I guess I'll go with that for now. Rats.

That attendant scraping up your car is MESSED UP !!! I'd me SO mad too !

Here's another question for you !!! Ready ?? The young guy at Auto Zone told me it should be an easy fix to get my A.C. running. A conversion kit was what I should get. He was all enthusiastic and told me to come back in the spring and he'd show me how it goes. And...said I could totally do it ( on accounta I'm handy that way ) I go recently... he doesn't work there any more. grrrrr So. Is it complicated ? What all is necessary to purchase ?? Tips ? I truly don't know all the specs of what I have and don't... he seemed to " see" that I needed the kit. Dunno about these things yet. Enlighten me ?? :) Thanks guys !!!

Hey I did just the same thing with my Olds years back. Checked the roof rack all over, walked up adn down the road for 20 minutes (realized it right after I pulled out of the gas station and noticed my gas door was open). Does yours have a spoiler, by chance? Found mine in the spoiler.
