On most cars, when the rear suspension is upgraded for towing, the front springs were as well. If nowhere else has them, Performance Suspension Technologies claims they can make any factory spring, including the heavy duty, single rate Grand Marquis sedan trailer springs, and they are RARE.
I put a down payment on the 1970 kingswood today. I will pick it up early next week. It was so clean underneath it looks like a southern car. It ran and drove OK also for having original front end bushings and drum brakes all around.
You would be surprised how light the rear springs are. If I remember the springs for a 78-90 B-body wagon were a mere 178lbs springs. I think 3/4 ton springs would be way over kill.
I know I’m bringing up a thread from the dead, but I ordered some replacement front springs for my 70 Kingswood and they seem to be crazy long and literally have an arch to them when they are installed. Does anyone know what the spring rate and free length of the shock Springs front/rear for a SBC?
New springs do require a few weeks to settle down, so if it's driveable, take it out every day and drive it over the next few weeks. They should settle, which'll take the arch out eventually. If it isn't, you'll need to wait till you can drive the wagon to get the springs to settle.
