OK, Oregon guys... wife has booked the family a vacation in Bend (Sunriver), Oregon for a week in August. We will come down the I5 from Vancouver and I am wondering what the quickest way to Bend is? I see 3 options on the map, head east out of Portland on Hwy 26, east out of Salem on Hwy 22 or east out of Albany on Hwy 20. I've got about a 6 hour drive to Portland and want to get to Bend within the day.

    I appreciate the assistance!

That pic is actually from the BOP show in Langley at Campbell Valley Park... but that is a '55 chev parked beside me! I've not seen another '67 Electra convertible locally, so if you've seen one, it was mine!

I5, I90, US97. Much nicer drive than I5/I84 skip the big cities completely. If you want, take the Interstate I84/I5 when you go home. The Columbia gorge looks nice westbound anyway. Both routes are about the same distance/time.

I would say Hwy 26 out of Portland to Madras and Hwy 97 is your most direct shot. I've spent a vacation at Sun River myself. Very relaxing vacation.
    Things to do:
    - Bike riding (mostly flat, lots of trails, bike paths)
    - High Desert Museum - right on Hwy 97 about 8 miles south of Bend, before you get to Sun River.
    - Kayaking
    - Rafting
    - Hiking - be sure to see the lava tubes. Take good hiking shoes and some energy bars with you. I thought it was going to be maybe a hundred yard cave - it's about 1/2 a mile. Bring flashlights!

Google maps says that this is the fastest at 8 hours and 37 minutes.

Taking the US 22 route from Salem is 20 miles and 5 minutes longer.

Taking US 20 from Albany is 34 miles and 20 minutes longer.

The time differences aren't that great, especially for the US 22 route versus the US 26 route.

The I-5, I-90, US 97 route, according to Google, is 35 miles and 39 minutes longer than the I-5, US 26 route. Again, hardly a big difference in the context of a trip that's going to take around 9 hours no matter how you slice it.

As suggested by others, I'd go one there one way and go back another way, just for variety.

    Thanks Guys, it's much appreciated!

I've done the Google Map thing, but I've found those times in the past to be unreliable on other trips, so I wanted "real world" experience on the actual times!

Thanks Krash, I'm going to really enjoy Sunriver as I'm a huge outdoors guy... I didn't know about the caves though, so I will certainly check those out. My boys are going to love it.

Now I just have to decide to get the a/c repaired on the wagon so we can bring it. (y)

I've found their travel times to be too conservative as well, but I figured they'd at least scale together. Whatever Google said was the fastest route would still be fastest, second-fastest would still be second-fastest, etc., regardless of how long they actually took. I've generally found this aspect of Google maps to be generally true.
