I need to change out or rebuild the rear end in the 1967 Caprice 396wagon that I have recently bought. What would be suitable swapable rear ends for this car?

    Thanks in advance.

Having a factory installed BB in the wagon should also give you the benefit of a T-400 and a 12-bolt! [count the bolts]
This was the premium rear from 1965 to '74 [?] that came behind any high-performance motor over 325 HP, small and big blocks alike!
All parts are still available, with ratios from low 2's to somewhere in the 6's!
    Yours is probably a 3:08 - what's it doing??

Mine has the TH 400 and 12 bolt.

It's making a howling noise that occurs as rpm comes up, and declines upon deceleration.

Probably a pinion bearing - did you change the fluid? - pop the cover over a drain pan, and replace the gasket. Will also let you see the ratio, [stamped on the pinion gear] and if you've positraction! [clutches visable in the pinion carrier]
