    Qoute from News....

The Johnson Street Bridge was built in 1924 to connect downtown Victoria with Esquimalt, and is reportedly one of only two counterweight bridges left in the world. The counterweight design allows the bridge to rise so taller ships may sail beneath it.

From my searching, the only other bridge with it's counterweightdesign is the Chattanooga's Market Street Bridge (1917) in the USA

Kinda a drag to see the old girl go, but she honestly was so rusted, the paint was the only thing keepimg it from falling into the water. The rail section of the bridge was first closed to train traffic almost 2 years ago but was left for pedestrian use to then half a year ago close it perioud. Car traffic is still going on.

    Pics of construction.....

Bye Bye old bridge. In my teens a few friends and myself climbed the old girl late at nite, wasn't the smartest thing to do but good memories none the less.

Sad to see something so unusual and rare disappear. But I guess we all have to go sometime as our parts rust and wear out.
    Thanks for the photos.
Like the old bridge I find it harder to get up every day. :2_thumbs_up_-_anima

having been to ILL sate and Chicago several times, thats exactly what I thought, but from the little I searched it apears that those bridges although very similar are of a different engeniered desin.

None the less are gone the days of a lifting bridge, slowly day by day .... when a man or two went to work sitting in his shack, watching, waiting for ships to come in, raising any bridge nomater the design. There still are alot left but just how long will they last as shipping/trucking/rail has changed so much over the years.

Yea but they all are/were counter weight bridges. That's like saying we are not alike because your hair is a different color.
We're alike? Now that's scary !

This is an easy one. It's only half loaded when you are loading it.
But it's half empty when you get there and begin unloading !
:drink:But when it comes to a glass it depends what's in it. If it's beer it's never full enough.

Yes, and many of us are filled with air. Some hot air !:rofl2:
And I've seen a lot of people the past years with a large counter-weight built in!
