I wonder if that hole in the piston has anything to do with lack of power......lol

What do you think is the cause of this? That engine has a long reputation as being a good engine. Only thing that you can say bad about that vintage of MB is the crappy materials that MB made the wiring harness out of. Will you fix that engine or put in a replacement?

Sure looks like a dropped valve, top of that piston looks like a miner was using a pickaxe on it, looking for gold.

    "heard a strange noise"

    I love it.
Being in the service side of the tractor industry I see this type of thing from time to time. Customer comes in and says something like "I was just puttering along... then this weird noise... I service it regularly..."

I bet they drove it into the shp too. Aside from the piston being shot, the head is probly toast and there are bound to be little parts of piston all through that motor.

…yep, looks like it's gonna be a complete engine swap.
Cleaning out the old engine cost more, and there's no guarantee that you will find all the pieces...

One of my Ex-GF's moms was just like that. She had a 2.2 Chevy Beretta with close to 300k on it that she used as an Amish Hauler and one day asked me to add some oil to it, she said it started making a little noise. It was dusk and dark under the hood. I popped the hood and blindly reached for the HUGE oversided dipstick/filler tube right infront of the motor, well it was gone, I leaned down and squinted in the dark to look closer and it was nowhere to be seen. I propped the hood, dug in my pocket for my BIC lighter and sparked a flame. HOLY SH*T!!!!! There was a 3 inch hole in the side of the block where the tube should be. I was in shocked. I went in and said, "You said a little noise? Are you deaf? The motor looks like someone took dynamite to it, its junk". She come out, not believing me. She said "huh, how did that happen?" I told her it leaks more oil then it burns and it is always smoking, I told her many times that she neede to check it everyday. She said she forgot to, and it had been over a week since she checked it and it was at the add mark then. :banghead3: OH MAN, it took over a qt every couple days, that is how bad it leaked and burned it. I asked her how she didnt hear or feel it when it come apart and shook while running as she hammered away, she said she just turned the radio up louder and kept on going and she drove it about 3 miles home like this!!!!!?????? :banghead3::banghead3:
