if she is fuel injected, there will be a service engine light. If she is equipped with the 351W, she originally had a 2bbl VV carb, and no check engine light. If she does have the carb, change the VV to an Edelbrock Performer intake and square bore 600 cfm carb. You'll be astounded at the mileage. Either way, put a good dual exhaust on her. You gain 10 - 30 horse depending on how good the exhaust is, and better yet, anywhere from 4 to 12 mpg.

    MikeT1961,
It is a 5.0 fuel injected and I still have found no check engine light. Would dual exhaust help fuel mileage and power on a fuel injected car?

When ordered with either the Trailer Tow III package or the Handling/Performance package, a dual exhaust was fitted at the factory. It was a so-so system with 2 inch pipes and the standard, quiet, restrictive mufflers. That was good for 10 h.p. on the factory rating. If you do a cat back system with an 'X' cross over and FlowMaster DeltaFlow mufflers on 2 1/4 inch pipes, you would gain more like 20 horse compared to the single. Add low restriction cats and long tube headers and you gain another 10 or so horse. Roughly speaking, for every 10 horse you gain with easier breathing, you gain 2 - 3 mpg in cruise mode because of the easier breathing.

One more idea. Change the O2 sensors if they are old. They get dirty and don't read accurately. You have 2, one on the back of each exhaust manifold. They can make a 30% difference if fuel consumption.

    Tranny Really???

Well I licensed my wagon, filled up the fuel tank and started driving it. It is a nice ride and everything was working good. I had been driving it about a week back and forth to work when one day on the freeway i went to accelerate and the motor started revving up but the car started slowing down.
I let off the throttle and tried accelerating again and the trans neturaled out so I down shifted manually and got home. I decided that my overdrive band/clutch gave up. So last Saturday I went to the junk yard and pulled a transmission out of a 1989 Merc something or other for $55. Got home pulled the transmission out of the wagon and installed the junk yard transmission.
I changed the fluid and filter and headed out for a test drive and all seems good. Not a bad days work and done by dinner time:dancing:

I don't normally slap little girls. But slap that daughter of yours and show her how much fun old station wagons can be. :yahoo: Nice yard sale find.
Wife found me a 55 Chevy once but it wasn't cheap.
