Help with belts, diagram or photo?

    So we moved two weekends ago, and with 5 miles to go in our 170 mile journey, I broke the alternator/power steering/water pump belts in my '77 Impala wagon.

    The one that goes from the alternator to the fan we were able to replace. The one that's for the power steering and water pump we're having a hard time figuring out. We bought three different sized belts because our Chilton (and our small town auto parts store) weren't sure or specific on which ones I needed.

    I was hoping someone out in the forums would also have an old Chevy with a 350 in it that has V belts instead of a serpentine belt (and air conditioning) who could maybe take a picture so I can see how my belt is suppose to go in? Or if you had a link to a good diagram?

    We need to have this operational by the weekend of the 6th, and I'm between paychecks until then so I can't take it in anywhere.

    Good luck. If our son was here with his 1976 El Camino I could get the info off of the sticker or draw a picture from the belt possitions. Don't know why I am writing because the car ain't here.
    Someone else should be able to do that. The diagram is on the shroud.
    Even NAPA or other parts stores should have pictures on their computer thingie.

    A little hard to get good photos but here is the set up on my 77 Impala, it has a 305 but I think the 350 should be the same.
    The only one a little hard to see is the power steer belt it goes on the crank pulley closest to the engine and then to the ps. the ps pully has 2 belt groves again the one that drives it is closeest to the engine

    Well we got the right belts and got them on. It looks like the reason that the old ones broke was because the AC unit seized and it's not letting the belt rotate. Then when that one broke it wrapped around the second belt and snapped it.

    Can I just bypass the AC unit with a smaller belt? Would anyone know what belt that is so I don't have to buy 6 of them and return them all again, haha? We put some WD40 on it tonight to see if it'll loosen up by morning, but if it doesn't I can't take it in anywhere until the Friday we need to leave.

    Sorry for all the questions, neither my husband or I are car-mechanically inclined, and we're having our first kid on the 10th and this is our "safe, family car." Which is currently out of commission. : (

    Do not install the belt that turns the compressor and keep the other belts in the same place they were.

    What about the power steering pump?
    It's tough going but you could at least drive the car that way.
    They do list a belt for power steering and fan w/o AC for that engine.

    See photo the ps has a duel pully has a seperate belt for the ps. The 2 outer pully is only a pass through for the ac compressor at least that is how mine is set up

    My 83 has the same belt set-up as shown in the photos. You definitely can leave the A/C belt off; the power steering pump is driven by the short belt from the crank pulley.

    I don't know the correct belt to buy, but I wouldn't recommend going with only the short belt on the power steering pump as that will only leave you with only one belt on your water pump not a good idea..

    Get a longer belt that goes around the power steering and water pump. I had to do this also, find a older Chevy that had no AC and look at the belt setup on it...With luck you can get a number off it or get a part number at a parts store for the vehicle you looked at. Good luck:)

    I agree, I had to trouble shoot a belt size once for our 85 Mustang after I removed the smog pump. It's real eazy, I wraped 1/4 rope around to find the apx length and although I had to buy 4 different belts one of those were correct. The auto store let me return the other belts so there wasn't any extra cost.
