My 1950 Pontiac "tin woody" is badly in need of new tires (P205/75R15). Either wide whites or black walls are period correct. The car, otherwise, is an unrestored survivor, not a trailer queen. Would you go for the much more expensive wide whites?
Hmm, good question, I would go with whatever most of them came with from the factory. Any way to tell how yours was originally equipped?
That's like asking pretty redhead or blonde !~ It's not which is the cheapest, it's what do you like? Me, it's whitewalls everytime. Altho my wagon is a streetrod so the blackwalls seem proper. Now if I can just get a blonde---or a redhead to go cruisin I'll be happy!
-------In all reality few wagons back then had white side wall tires. -------- But if only one did, I'd want mine to have them too! Now back to the redhead/blonde issue!
Since you have the more expensive wheel covers I am gonna bet the factory tire was a wide-white .... if it had dog dishes I would say go with blackwalls. .... its always nice when the carpet matches the drapes!! LOL
WWW I put a narrow ww on my 57 and regret not biting the bullet and going for the full www's. Next time for sure. Seeing cars with both, even with the added effort of keeping them white, I feel like I missed the boat. It does come down to personal taste, and yep, they are more work to keep clean, but man, when they are clean and the car is clean they just make everything come alive. I love your wagon, by the way. It is dark already, so blackwall tires would not really add anything to its appearance. The whites would - anyone got a software program they can show it with whites?
Not everytime. I've dated redheads, blondes, and everthing except bald headed women. Not even sure about that! Been married to a blonde so long I forgot what the others were like. But I still like wide white walls!---- --------And I don't believe the size of the hubcaps had anything to do with white or black tires. Altho sometimes size matters.
See thread 5008 in this thread (wagons in vintage street scenes) http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=156183#post156183 WWW's just make that car - and I'd have to say with the darker colors of yours it would by dynamite.
No question in my mind. The wide white walls every time. And Cat, I'm of the thinking that most people who would have gone for the expense of the upgraded full wheel covers over the hub caps, would also have gone for the additional expense of the white walls. As I remember from those times, most of the time that a car'd have blackwalls, it'd have the little hubcaps too. Guess the original buyers were too cheap to go for either!!
I´d go for the wide whites! Everytime... But never in a million years i would put metric radials on a car like that.. Good quality diagonals will always be worth it, in both looks and handling of the car! Thats my two cents....
Period correct width WW's for sure on your color and wood! The Pontiac brochures for 51 -52 show ALL their cars with WW's and either size hubcaps. The 1948 shows only WW's on full disc caps. Assume most that bought full caps sprung for the WW too
Many car sales literature showed white wall tires for apperances. In the midwest it seems most vehicles had wide whites then those narrow whites. i always ordered or switched to white wall tires. Still love them but don't have any with them now.
