http://usnews.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2...eist-display-skeleton-santa-nailed-to-a-cross I'm not at all proud of any of this. But this is the way it is in the beautiful historic town of Leesburg, Virginia. There was always a Nativity display on the courthouse lawn every year at Christmas. An Athiest group complained and in 2009 the display was banned. But people rallied in support of the display. So the city and/or county in their ever increasing efforts to be politically correct let the first ten groups to apply put up pretty much any display they wanted for 2010. There was even a Star Wars display last year. This year members of an Athiest group got approval for a display of a skeleton in a Santa Claus suit nailed to a cross. That of course caused controversy and someone tore it down. Now the controversy is about freedom of speech and their right to put up that display. To me its basically a hate crime putting up a display like that. I thought Athiests believed in no religion at all. But this display singled out and attacked the Christian religion only. Now they are saying the display is "Art". Some of those displays looked pretty tacky on the courthouse lawn last year, but I didn't really have a problem with the displays from various religions and organizations. This one should never have been allowed and like I said, to me it singles out and offends members of the Christian faith.
No, I don't. But Orlando has a CHRISTMAS tree. (which isn't Christian anyway.) I'm fine with that, in fact I enjoy it. I love egg nog. Christmas carols? Great. And I give holiday gifts, but NONE of them come from WalMart. And by the same token, I don't believe in Santa Clause, either.
Thus is why the USA came to be so that we can believe in what we want. I'm a semi tree hugger. I don't see any sense in cutting down trees especially for the White House and 30 Rock Center or anywhere else. Cummon folks why couldn't the White House have grown a tree out front, after all the White House has been continually occupied since 1815. God gave China the ability to manufacture trees for a reason. Happy Kwanza, Christmas, Hunnikah and Dec. 25th etc. etc.
Sorry I got a bit worked up over this, but like I said, it was a display approved and allowed put on public property, that singled out and attacked the Christian religion. If it were on the private property of the person making the display that would be another story. If on the the other hand it was put in the front yard of a Christian, I would view it as a hate crime (based on how attacks on other religions are viewed and treated). The town should have never approved a display like that on public property, unless it attacked All the major religions of the world. Then everyone could be offended equally.
Do not apologize. It is a hate crime and it was vulgar IMO. I do not consider myself an athiest, And I have made my beliefs clear for the most part so you can imagine my feelings on things of this nature. -X
