I'll admit that I'm not the brightest bulb in the box but something confuses me.

Does everyone get the insurance ads on TV touting lower rates? So here's my idea:

Say for sake of this that I have State Farm and it cost me $1200 per year, well Allstate claims I can save $590 to switch to them, now insurance is $610. Progressive claims I can save $400 by switching to them from Allstate. Done, now I'm paying $210. Not to be undone I can switch to Mercury and save an additional $312. Now will Mercury pay me $98 for the privilege?:tiphat:

Also according to adds I see everytime I log on the government has a special very low insurance for us seniors. So wonder why we still pay $1200 a year? Also my agent told me my rate went up because my truck was new. My truck is now seven years old and the rate keeps going up. ---------:slap: How about Obama's newest gimmic that we will be charged 1% on all bank transactions? Doesn't sound like much does it? I'm still trying to figure out how come an illegal alien is President!

Don't believe anything you hear or see when it comes to auto insurance commercials.

To make it sound like they have great rates, an insurance company will research their rates, checking a 'make-believe' driver and a particular zip code residence location. They also use the same info to check the rates of whatever company they want to compare themselves again. When they find a particular comparison that's way far apart, they've got their "Save 75%" comparison for the media. Of course, that's just one particular driver, location and two companies. That same company might have many other comparisons where it's actually the other insurance company with the better rates.

With so many variables (drivers and driving experience, location, usage (miles to work usually..), it's really hard to compare apples to apples. Comparing mattresses from 2 different stores comes to mind......

Your best bet is to first determine how much of which coverages you need (liability limits; deductible amounts, whether to take optional coverages like medical, uninsured motorist, etc...).

After you do that, then take that information to the companies you want to get quotes from.

Well I did some research and did find a lower rate. Much much lower. I was paying 118 a month for full coverage on my Focus, then I decided to look around some. Well the cheapest I found was Progressive, so now I'm paying 88 dollars a month for the exact same coverage. Plus I have my Vista Cruiser on that policy with basic liability. So I'm saving 30 bucks a month, over 12 months that is a savings of 360 bucks. Then once the Focus is paid off (July 2012), I'll drop the full coverage and it will save me even more.

Then it again, it comes down to the type of vehicle you own and coverage, blah blah blah.

We don't get Auto Insurance ads. Our gov't owned agency even makes money and sends us discount cheques, and License fee discounts as well as insurance discounts. Maybe the private corps are paying big bonusses?
