Howdy folks. Haven't visited much lately. Have a HUGE (10 millimeter) kidney stone. Those of you who've had them know how they hurt. Woke up EARLY with it on a Mon. morning. Finally calmed down late afternoon/early evening. Figured, no big deal, not my first & probably not the last. Had one before that, passed about a week after it started hurting. Figured this one'd be the same - WRONG!!!! Started hurting again Tues. A.M., left the job & told them they'd have to cover me again that afternoon. Went home to bed. Finally, like Mon., late afternoon/early evening it quit. Wed. morning &hurting again, gave up & tried calling the clinic, they said I'd have to go to the E.R. to be seen. Had a friend drive me down there. They examined me & told me how big it was. Put a stent in around it the next day & kept me overnight. Sent me home the next day. Been about 3 -4 weeks ago. Have a "TENTATIVE" date of Nov. 1st to have it removed. V.A. is NOT noted for their speed. On Vicodin for it, kinda knocks me out (does wonders for my income, drive school bus). Anyway, sorry for the long story. Just wanted to say I haven't deserted/forgotten y'all.

Thanks. Knew I had it in there, kinda why I didn't get excited the 1st day. They did a cat scan? MRI? earlier in the year to check my prostrate & showed me the pictures. Both looked about the same size in the picture, just figured I'll pass it in about a week. 3 days later, I decided enough's enough & went to the E.R. That's when they said 10 mm/marble, you're NOT going to pass this one. Still trying to see if I can get in sooner.

    What causes these things?
I've never had one, so I'm wondering what are the signs?

Signs of the first few times is that you will get a sudden sharp pain in your back near the kidney that will send you to your knees. The worst pain you can imagine. You will think you have been shot or stabbed. The pain will persist periodically as it works its way through the ureter to the bladder. IF it is small enough to make the trip. There are few things that are more painful. DEEP pain that you can't get rid of. You will try every position to try to alleviate the pain but nothing will work. The bigger they are the longer it takes to go through the ureter and will cause pain all the way through. Sometimes days, sometimes weeks, sometimes months. Urologists prefer that they pass on their own rather than blasting them or going after them. Pain pills and waiting is the norm. If they are too large to pass they will hurt occasionally in the kidney but that pain is not nearly as intense or as frequent as when they are smaller and on the move.
There are different kinds of stones made up of different things. I don't remember all the different ones but some are made up of calcium. All I know is that my doc told me that the only thing nearly as painful may be child birth. If I were a woman and knew this beforehand...I would be forever childless!

Ouchie! Sorry to everyone who has ever had a kidney stone, or ever will. Even at my age I've never had one that I know of. I suppose I'd known!:slap: This leaves me with a few questions............Does it hurt an oyster when it has a pearl? Can you have yours put on a string and give it to your wife-girlfriend as a gift? Come on oldfordman laugh. Maybe it will pass the stone!:rofl2:

Hope you get to feeling better OFM...my wife had one once when she went to the doctor he told her to drink a beer occasionally to help flush the kidneys. I said I could have told you that. she says, your not a doctor how would you know? I said because I drink beer and have never had a kidney stone in my life! :rofl2:

    (y) Thanks for the well wishes everybody. Have SEVERAL people tell me The Dew causes them, asked the dr., she said no, look at how many people drink it & DON'T have them. SEVERE pain is putting it mildly. I have severe pain in what's left of my knee. It's NOTHING like this. But, yes the first symptom I get is the pain in the kidney area, sorta on your side, sorta in the back. Not exactly either & both at the same time. After it moves, your back won't hurt anymore, but a certain private part of your body, shall we say, will start stinging. They tell me that means it's in the bladder & almost out. If you ever have/pass one, believe me, YOU WILL KNOW IT!!!!!!!!! You won't have to ask. Have called about 3 times this week & left a message asking them IF they can move me up on the schedule. Never know when it's going to start hurting. Starts hurting, have to take my Vicodin. Take my Vicodin J.I.C., can't drive. No drivee, no money!! Had that problem last weekend, took an overnight field trip up to Quincy, Ill. Got there okay, about 1:30 in the morning, I called a taxi & went to the E.R. there. They shot me full of something that as soon as it hit my veins, room started spinning. No drivee. Called the asst. mgr. about 5 A.M. & told him, you need to send somebody else up here to take these people on over to Liberty, Ill. at 8 A.M. for their cross country race. Made him a happy camper - NOT!!

Yes, what he said Fordman. I'm beginning to get these hurting pains in unmentionable areas just thinking about your pain. Pass it on... the information about how you are doing! Sometimes laughing hysterically creates movement in the strangest areas. :thumbs2:
