Thought id share this with you http://blogs.houstonpress.com/hairballs/2011/10/land_yachts_car_ads.php
I love them all! I really do need to look for the most fashionable of station wagons, the 1969 Colony Park...gorgeous! Thanks, Forever! David
So they figure a 70 Cougar is an "Impossibly huge car", a "land yacht", an "incredibly wasteful gas guzzler". To me a 70 Cougar was a pony car, which means it was actually relatively small compared to most cars of the time. But to the writer of this article, you just about have to "pack a lunch to walk from the drivers side to the passenger side". This must be one of those articles about cars written by someone who drives a Smart car or Prius and who thinks everyone else should be driving the same thing, and who would be shocked to learn that anyone disagrees with them. I would have enjoyed the videos more without the anti-car commentary.
It was a pony car, at least my Dad's 70 351C toploader was. And is sure looked small parked beside my Uncles Gallixie 500. "Pack a lunch".... to do what, drive a 70 cougar to the other side of a 77 Lincoln?
"One of these things is not like the others..." to quote Sesame Street. As the owner of a (worn-out) 1969 Cougar (same body as the '70), I was going to barge in here and cry "Foul", but I see I am late to the party. Oh well...
There is a beautiful 77 Continental for sale just down the street from me. It's in great condition. I love the land yachts even the ones that were smaller than the rest. I miss them really. My parents had a couple when I was growing up. Nothing else like them. Thanks for the post. I love to see those cars.
