    Hi There,

I working my old brain here.

I'm thinking that Ford type H was called for but is no longer available so I'm thinking type F which in todays lingo is Dexron III but don't take my word for it. I think the container states what it can be used as a substitute for. A very trusted transmission shop can tell you. I wouldn't necessarily trust some of the big chain shops. A trusted independant or one that commonly repairs "vintage" transmissions. Your tranny is probably a C6.

My 92 Tbird calls for Dexron III but Dexron V is better for it. Transmission oil is very confusing for older cars.

Yeah... i know very very confusing.

Maybe there's some information on the measurment device
(how do you call it in 'english' ) i'll check that later.

The specialties shop looked it up on their computers but no such car was available! duhhh!

I just don't want her to drink something she doesn't like ;-)

    Thanks for the reply!

Do not use anything but type "F" in that vintage.
No Mercon, Dexron, none of that stuff. It's not the same, it's too slippery.

I'm glad somebody new the answer. When my Cooga tranny was rebuilt they use Dexron III and I had zero problems but the right stuff is very important considering the "friction modifyers" are what makes it all work.

    Good luck finding "F".

I never had any trouble with Dexron III in the AOD and I've never heard of anyone running Dexron V in one. I know the later AOD-E and 4R70W required Dexron V. I wouldn't sub it in in your AOD.

    :D that's al lot of technical talk i don't understand i'm afraid :)

AOD? and i'm not sure the oil types here in Holland are called Dexron or something like that.

    Found some additional info:

"What kind of automatic transmission fluid should you use in your transmission? The type specified in your owner's manual or printed on the transmission dipstick.

For older Ford automatics and certain imports, Type "F" is usually required. Most Fords since the 1980s require "Mercon" fluid, which is Ford's equivalent of Dexron II.

For General Motors, Chrysler and other imports, Dexron II is usually specified.

NOTE: Some newer vehicles with electronically-controlled transmissions require Dexron IIe or Dexron III fluid. GM says its new long-life Dexron III fluid can be substituted for Dexron II in older vehicle applications.

CAUTION: Using the wrong type of fluid can affect the way the transmission shifts and feels. Using Type F fluid in an application that calls for Dexron II may make the transmission shift too harshly. Using Dexron II in a transmission that requires Type F may allow the transmission to slip under heavy load, which can accelerate clutch wear.

    AOD is Automatic Overdrive transmission.

AOD-E is the Electronic Automatic Overdrive transmission.

I think the AOD is the last of the non-electronically controlled Ford 4 speed transmissions.

Frankly I don't know what oil is in my AOD as it was shop serviced but I heard that Dexron V was OK but I don't fiddle with automatics. Since regular service is under $80 here I don't deal with the mess.

I had forgot about the Mercon. I only use transmission fluid for power steering as Ford recommends either transmission oil or power steering fluid in my Fords.

The owner's manual is a good source for fluid specs if you have one for your CS. Sometimes, you might find the info on the trans dipstick too. Good luck!
