Driving along today at 60 mph and the Cruiser shuts off. There was no sputtering or roughness, so I am sure it was not a fuel related problem. It was like I just cut the switch off. I coasted to a stop on the side of the road and it fired right back up. Drove it home (15 miles) and it never missed a lick. I really don't want to get rid of it, but this is one of those problems that will be impossible to find unless it fails to restart. I just can't trust it on a long trip since it has done this. Anybody ever had this happen?
350 Chevys with HEI Yea I did!---------Many times. Each was something different. On GM, loose wire from HEI. Bad ignition switch. Loose fuse or loose wire. On a Ford, the tiny wire on starter solinoid. On the old shoebox Ford with 302 it was as simple as getting mad and slamming door that made wire contact again. Then I just followed the solinoid wires and found the tiny one just barely hanging there. Loose wire to it or bad fuel pump. Filter. Plugged line or dirty pickup. None of this will help you. But getting mad and cussing may help!:banghead3:
It might be the fuel pump going out. It just cut off cleanly like it lost fire. Doesn't really seem like a fuel problem, as most times it will buck a little before it cuts off. I am thinking about getting something without a computer and FI. Saw a nice '84 Caprice for sale with a carb and no computer. Might buy it. Tired of all this electronic junk.:2_thumbs_up_-_anima
I had a earlier model Chevy have a similar problem and it was in the distributor.I had a extra one so I swapped it out and problem went away, but that is just a guess since you don't feel like it is fuel related.
The distributor was my first thought. It really appeared to be an ignition problem, as the engine just stopped dead at 60 mph. It will be difficult to trace unless it starts doing this frequently or does not restart. Might be time to let her go. Had the old wagon for several years and it doesn't owe me a dime.
Yep, I forgot to mention the distributor. Both points type and HEI will let you down. Had an HEI modul that would stop working then be okay again. Most just quit.........as it finally did 8 miles from home after a 140 mile trip. Right near a Auto parts store. That ole car likes me as much as I like it! That's why a 350 Chevy in a 1941 Ford is not a bad idea.
What do you think the chances are that the problem is the ignition control module? I had a Dodge once that would cut off like my Olds did. It would restart and run for days before it cut off again. Turned out to be the electronic ignition box. Same exact symptoms.....might try a new one before I sell the old girl....
Here are some HEI ignition troubleshooting tips: http://forums.carcraft.com/70/66176...ion/gm-hei-ignition-module-testing/index.html http://www.chevelles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=190703
I t is showing some codes, but nothing that would cause it to cut off. I checked with my buddy that runs a garage up the road and he said he was 99% sure it would be the module inside the distributor. I ordered one and will give that a try before I sell it.
