Hi Guys , thought id join up as ive just scored an 8 seater 1989 pontiac safari wagon in light blue metallic with light wood sides. She got blue velour interior still has the original wire wheel covers. Engine trans and running gear very good with genuine 50K but body, wood and paint all need doing- usual fading on hood and roof and wood peeling away. Will be posting many questions im sure - 1st job is to repair/replace saggy headliner (any advice?) These old wagons are getting pretty rare in England now and although not true classics I like them and they are mega value! A pic of my grand wagoneer woody is enclosed also (funny but not sure if you guys include the wagoneer in the 'club' - but i think it qualifies!-not seen any on here before) from memory here are some other wagons ive had! 1979 caprice wagon-brown,manual windows,no wood, vinyl seats,5 litre. 1976-77? volaire in gold with wood, all electric,v8, deflector etc. 1982 mercedes 280TE,triumph 2500PI estate auto,Jeep wagoneer and now pontiac safari-plus grew up with just about every Ford Granada estate ever made as family owned a dealership! bye for now
to the wagon train, euro. Gotta love those GM box wagons. Biggest problem with replacing the headliner yourself is that the plastic clips break and they are no longer readily available.
http://auveco.com/eSource/ecom/common/prodesc/pdf/420.pdf thanks silverfox- which ones are they? they i'll scour the world to find the little fellars!
I don't know what they look like. I used to build GM box wagons and install 455 engines, etc. but, never had a bad headliner. There have been, however, threads here about the problem. I am posting a link to a good one below for your perusal........ http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10268 EDIT: If you still have questions it may be wise to send 84Parisienne (nice guy) a Private Message. He will, undoubtedly, know what the clips look like and he will be able to walk you through the removal and replacement.
Welcome Euro Theis pulling up to say hello from Florida. Glad you stopped in. Have fun and enjoy your toys.
Welcome, Euro. Nice selection of wagons you have there. Here's a recent thread from member Cyber-Wizard on a headliner job for his '81 Pontiac Bonneville SEDAN. (Same basic car as your Pontiac) Might have a few tips you can use..... Marshall http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14214
Welcome Eurowag. Hope you have a long and pleasant visit! Those wagons are getting scarce everywhere. Even the box Caprice sedans are hard to find in unbutchered condition.
Welcome aboard EuroWag!! As Krash mentioned above, I just recently finished a headliner replacement in my '81 Pontiac Parisienne sedan. I have a Fisher Body Guide that covers all of the '81 models and would be very similar to the earlier ones. Frankly, when it came to clips, the manual was all but useless. My sedan was missing 3 clips when I started removing the trim...it's missing 4 now. I saved the trim piece that came out in the hopes of finding a replacement. Feel free to shoot me a line if you want to pick my brain while the details are still bubbling at the top.
welcome euro! we always appreciate our European members here, you guys have true dedication ( Im not saying the locals don't!) given the super high cost of fuel and ownership. If you have trouble locating parts let us know. a lot of us go to scrapyards on the weekends.
GM box wagons Hi guys , thanks for the warm welcome! Yep your right - we have to be die hards in Europe to run big old american cars! ( or slightly insane) . I love station wagons which many people just dont get! _ still its very funny driving by people as their jaws hit the ground. The other day i was at stop lights and a kid said 'mummy -why has that car got wood on its sides?'- she didnt know why either! Thanks for the headliner link- ive already got samples of blue foam backed nylon coming from a UK supplier. Will buy it and do the job if colour and quality OK. My 79 caprice wagon had exactly the same issues with sagging liner ( I did 15,000 miles in that wagon in 1990 and drove through 28 states of the USA with no issues except re-lining rear drums!- Go Caprice!) Another question for GM box wagon owners - My rear bumper fillers - the rubber bit which is now brital plastic have cracked! Who supplies these in usa? Also the rear tailgate rubber seal is cracked? any ideas (by the above is there anyone who specialises in the GM older parts?) thanks guys catch up soon
I, somehow, completely missed the thread by Cyber-Wiz that shows his headliner job. Here's the link to that thread for your perusal, euro...... http://www.stationwagonforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=14214
