Volkswagon is known for some of the greatest auto advertising ever, but this is not one of them IMO.
This ad is all about trying to convince the public that this new wagon is not a wagon. Yeah right. A Squareback sedan...please! And their premise that the Microbus is a station wagon is wrong from the get-go. Lousy.

It would be years before the auto industry could come up with the right bogus name-changing nonsense that the public would go for, hook, line and sinker...the sport utility vehicle...genius!

"Let's call it anything, except a wagon. How 'bout...something else"

    David :)

I wouldn't call the VW Bus a station wagon. If you ever get stuck behind one going up a long mountain grade with no passing lane you can think of all kinds of "creative" names for them though:jumping:

You know I really hate to say this but some states would title the VW Bus as a wagon. I know NC titles a Suburban as a Station Wagon, but we all know it's really a truck based or as it was originally called a Carry All

Well NC would just to get more tax out of it. Then again they might try and title it as a 3/4 ton :rofl2:

That is most certainly one of their best TV ads, and so many of the print ads from this era were truly genius!
Guess by the time the Squareback came out, they were off their game. :thumbs2:

VW wasn't the only one. I believe, Ford's Econoline, Dodge's A-100, and Chevy's Corvair Greenbriar were all marketed as station wagons.
At the other end of the spectrum were cars like the Charger and Barracuda fastbacks that pre-dated hatchbacks, but had fold down rear seats and fold down panels separating the trunk from the passenger compartment for long loads. Original TV commercials for the 66 Charger claimed it was both a "station wagon and a sports fastback".

what made them 'wagons' by "description"...was the fact that they had 'windows' all around...that was the ID description in N.America.
