this is for the ford guys, and not a wagon issue, but i figure this is the most creative car group im a member of. Friend has a Fox body mustang, and those are set up where the ignition key and the door keys are separate. the older panthers (80's boxes) use the same key for the ignition and the doors. does anyone know if the ignition switches are interchangeable, as well as the door locks, so he can use one key for ignition and doors, and a separate trunk key?
the side of the key is different on those so they wont fit in the slot. so i was thinking of pulling an ignition and door lock tumbler from a crown vic in the pull lot, if i can find one with the keys . i see them sometimes with keys
The 1979 to 1984 Mustang/Capri keying system is interchangeable with the Fox sedan/wagon system. I just did mine. He could also sit quietly and pull the pins, one at a time and swap them from one ignition switch to the other. Good tweezers, baby or sewing machine oil and good lighting.
he loves that tedious work, i was going to go to the yard, and pull the door locks from a towncar, so the square key will go in the slot, then let him reset the pins to match his ignition key. has anyone ever taken a car door lock apart? can the plate that makes the S or Z shaped slot be moved from one assembly to another? I told him this wasnt going to be an easy fix, just so he could carry one key instead of two... crazy kids.
He'd make a mess of the faceplate (round disc). Luckily, the Fox wagons only use the round key on the tool storage box (optional) and the glovebox. All the rest is the square key.
so you think its easier, if i can find some door locks that accept a square key, and the square key, for him to reset the ignition tumbler, than try to rekey the locks to match his igntion?
If he's got the rectangular faceplates on the door locks, instead of the normal round ones, you may have to look at a Cougar, Tbird, Merc or Lincoln. But yeah, the ignition pins are easier to swap. He should soak both locks for an hour or so, swap the pins and lubriplate after.
yeah, hes got a 93 fox mustang, square face plate, but the slot will only accept the round key. so i need to find a lock with the square plate that will accept a square key. then reset the ignition, i was hoping to find a key in the car, but if i cant, the locksmith can make one.. so no big stress there, the biggest part is swapping the pins in the ignition switch haha
1993? Yep, the 1982 and up Tbirds, Cougars, Lincolns and Mercury cars are your best bet. Have a good look at his, from the inside to see if the little finger is removable (screwed on). If not, then you'll need to look at newer models - post 1987.
ok, now if the locks on his mustang will come apart this easy, i need to swap the 'door' it comes right out of the newer locks, if we can get his face plate off and swap the door part, then have both locks rekeyed to match his ignition we will be good to go.
What a shame! Can't believe Ford adopted the Tupperware parts craze to that level. Jase, I think this narrows down your options to the post-1990 models. Maybe a locksmith is your best bet.
bad news for me and now a trip to a different yard.. the inside of the tumbler keeps the same shape as the door...:banghead3: so back to square one and pulling locks from the correct car. dangit
