My next project is tires for my 92 Buick Roadmaster wagon. The car has factory alloy wheels and currently Michelin white walls. the Michelin is no longer made in size 225, 75, 15. I want to stay with that size tire, keep the factory wheels and also stay with white walls. I have found a few but it looks like that size has fallen out of favor. For some good american made tires there are American Classics thin white walls for $160 each. For imports the Maxxis MA-1, whitewall sounds pretty good, $106 imported from China, maybe India? Also a cheaper one from Pep Boys : Travelstar for $65 and Sigma Shadow, $73 from Merchants. I would like to get the american made Classics but think they are too pricy. Any one have experience with the Maxxis ? or the cheaper brands ?
Speaking from a recent experience....I bought a set of Hanook whitewalls for my 92 Cadillac Brougham because they were all I could find. Within the first couple of months the whitewalls got a slightly dingy look that would not clean up. I'm very particular about them, so it drove me crazy. Only cleaner used was standard wesley's bleach-white.
thanks I will cross Hanook whitewalls off my list. I am just now starting my search as my current tires are ok till next state inspection. But they are looking old, decent tread left but the whitewalls are not so white any more and cracked a little. These American Classic whitewalls sure would look nice on my white Buick.
Be sure to give Discount Tire Direct a try. Free shipping, but their tire prices are a little higher to cover it. Sometimes they have a special, buy 4 and get a $50 prepaid Visa card. They also have their own credit card and might offer 6 months same as cash. I have bought several sets of tires from them.
I believe you and I discussed that here when I bought my wheels and tires from there. I was so pleased I bought 4 tires for my truck, 4 for my wife's van and 4 for my Impala SS wheels all in a months time. I am a big fan of them!
The Maxxis MA-1 was a tire I was a little experience with. Had them on "The Van Of Questionable Mechanical Integrity", a 1991 Aerostar I replaced everything but the engine and tires on while I owned it. They had good grip, wet or dry, they were reasonably quiet and smooth riding and although I only put 28,000 or so on them before selling the van, it didn't seem like they wore at all. There are other tires I'd pick over a Maxxis, but I would choose them over a lot of other options. You'll find them online or at smaller local tire shops. I'm not sure NTB or Discount or national chains would have them, though.
