I can empathize! The black on red is a gorgeous color combination; and you would have spent more repainting or reupholstering any other wagon to get that scheme anyway! Not to mention the very low miles. Anyone have figures on inflation? What the list price might have been today?
Thanks Bernie. I don't know about adjustments for inflation, but I can tell you that based on the US-Canadian exchange rate in effect during October of 1989 when the car was purchased new (one dollar US bought 1.174 dollars Canadian) the Canadian list of $29,755 would have translated to $25,342 in US dollars.
"$25,342.00 in 1990 had about the same buying power as $43,398.73 in 2010.Annual inflation over this period was about 2.73%." Well, then, we have ourselves some luxury vehicles! Where was the manufacturing plant, btw? Mine was purchased in the states, but was manufactured in Canada; or so it says on the inside of the driver door.
buying power vs car prices though...price a grandmarquis today. and figure the diff between a sedan and wagon in 1991 that should be the price.
Hahaha, I never said that my way of calculating value was the REASONABLE or REALISTIC way Just the self-flattering, ego-building way!
using your method, which is I agree a better measure, it would be $37,000 ($18284 was the base retail for a grand marquis sedan in 1990; and the grand marquis sedan today is nearly 30k. wagon then is a 7k premium). Today's cars do see better appointed by many measures, so we have more buying power still than even that figure. On the other hand, I just, finally, unloaded my 2001 volvo at a painful $2500 loss, and the mechanic says it still needed another $3000 in work done to it! They don't seem to make 'em like they used to.
Agreed. I had a '93 Volvo wagon that I bought for the safety and made the mistake of equating safety with reliability. Had to have it towed more times than I can remember, and the thing was underpowered as heck. The more I drive the C.P., the less I want to drive anything else.
i like the CP and CS better than even my buick. hard to say but its true people make the mistake of thinking that just because the old volvo DL's were tough as nails that the new ones must be too!
What does CS stand for? Yeah; it's been a painful learning experience with the volvo. I absolutely couldn't afford the $2500 loss, and it'll take me all summer to pay it off. I'm wondering what today's most reliable wagons are? I'm hearing better things about subaru than volvo, volkswagon, bmw, or mercedes (as far as reliability). Wondering what I'll be driving 10 years from now, if by then the CP might have bitten the dust or at least been relegated to the garage. Agreed on the aesthetics assessment. It's really a question of taste, or, if you own both, what you're in the mood for that day! Sporty or classic? I like the classic likes of the CP. It fits my style.
Bernie, the C.S. is for Country Squire. As for current relaible wagons, I have a 2007 Subaru Outback(6 cyl.) which I expect to be driving for decades. The metallic white color feels a little feminine now, though, after driving the woody.
